Way to go Chris! I really like all the polish'npaint military combinations, but the Mrs voted against it. Call me henpecked <g>

<<I really like the spinner!>>

Me too. Is that a Sensenich part?

Wow!!!! Rick that thing looks beautiful!!! Looks like you did some pretty darn good riveting too! I can't see and waves in that mirror finish! Awesome just awesome!!!

N485JT

Here's a pic of the former N485JT, now N80XL and owned by Larry Wolf.
I finished and flew this aircraft in April 2008 and promptly sold it to him. The paint scheme is from the 30's and has really grown on me since the plane is in the hangar with N486JT and I see it every day.
I am really torn between a military scheme and a civilian scheme for 6JT.
I need to choose soon as it's scheduled into the paint shop in Dec.

i thought it was law that 8's had to have a military scheme.
it just doesnt fit a side by side like it does an 8. or i would have painted mine that way.

Yellow?

Have been planning pre-war but with polished fuselage. Anyone know what color yellow that is?

Yellow Paint

For pre WWII, you're looking for AN Yellow and it should be a slightly orangy yellow. I went though that search a while ago for a previous project (http://adap.com/rv7/images/BF_overwater2.jpg). Aerothane has that as standard, but you'll probably need to do a quick search to find the correct Federal Standard spec.

I'm planning on the same thing--just eyeballing different colors as I'm out and about, I really like the yellow on the Toyota FJ Cruisers--it's got a little orange in it and looks real close to John's above (great looking -8 by the way). For the fiberglass, I'm going to try the mirrachrome product mentioned in a few posts here--hoping it's a close match to the polished fuse.

Inflight Photos

First flight was Sep. 19. I have 60 hrs now and all I can say is WOW! Van designed one amazing aircraft :D.

One Sharp Plane

I saw Bills 8 at the Boshears Airshow this year in Augusta and I can tell you it is one sharp looking plane.
Nicely done Bill!

N912PS with new paint

N912PS first flew the end of April. In August, we took her to AOG Paint in Mena, AR. We are pleased with the result. So far we have flown 110 hours. The longest trip was in early August from Farmerville, LA(F87) to Boone County (6I4) near Indianapolis. We left Farmerville at 7:20 local and ate lunch in Indy with our daughter.

Nice job Zack! Looks like it coulda been on the flight line in Pensacola! :) Well done!

Cheers,
Bob

Paint Scheme

Bob,

Thanks for your kind words. As an aside, when my co-owner pulled up to the fuel pumps at Monroe (KMLU), the FBO guy told him, "I can't serve you, I lost the govenrment contract to the other FBO"

Doc's Delight

First Flight May 2008. Paint Nov 2008. 70 some hours of pure pleasure so far.:)

Doc's Delight

I was chase. It was about ride number 4 or 5. No wheel pants, paint and breaking in a new engine. Lead kept running away. It was first time to test the camera and a nice break. I see I need to get closer to get some better video. I got a lot more to work with now.

Doc,
Is the canopy from vans or ?
I 'm in TX. and the tint is what I'm looking for .
Great looking plane!

Canopy

I got it from Todds Canopy. I've no problems with it so far. I was told that his are a little easier to fit and are heavier. He has a lot more choices on the tint. I believe there is a post here somewhere on it.

My RV-8

Now that I've posted photos on the site(finally made the effort to figure out how!), here are some pictures of my RV-8.

First flight was in May 2008 and forty hours of Phase I completed. Incredible airplane with absolutely no complaints! Does everything as advertised by Van's and my expectations, and then some!!

How Big is yours

Kirk,
First off, great looking plane. I am have been planning a very similar paint scheme and was wondering what size your wing star and bar is and if you got them from Spruce. Thanks in advance for the reply and will you be bringing her to Oshkosh this year?

Hey Tim

Hello Tim,
I have the mesurments at the hangar I will be happy to get them this weekend and send them to you. Honestly Grady worked out all the sizes:D But I will be happy to round up that info and send it to you. You will love the scheme I have gotten a lot of really good feedback for it, this spring I am taking it to Atlanta and show Punchy the 8:)

Congratulations Chris on a stunning result. All the best for the final inspection and first flight!

Andrew

(PS: I'm still at the wings stage...)

Well no paint or interior but its flying!

I have to say that given the pressures of work, home, wife, etc its as done as it will be for a while. First flight on 7/27, had the inspection in the morning and barely got back together for the test flight before dark. It performs well above my expectations and all of Van's specs, 180-185ktas easy with a wonderful IO360roller engine built by Kenny at Lycon. I cant say enough good things about the Advanced Flight systems EFIS/EMS and the help from friends in getting it done. On this site I'm more of a lurker than a poster...but having it in the air finally inspires me to write more! Still have a lot of debug on various systems that have shown up in first 20+ hours but big picture its a lot of fun, scoots along like crazy, and that RV grin is hard to take off my face.

My New Gal

ProjectApril29.jpg

The FAA just signed her off. First flight will be after a bit more transition training. Help me come up with a name for her.

My wife likes the name "Blubyu" as is Blue Bayou or Blew by you. I would like to see if she is fast enough to name her such...or the name might end up being "Crow Eater"

"Name for Her"

I like the term "Patience". It gives a lot of meaning behind all the blood, sweat, and tears that went into your 8.

Congrats!!

See, I **TOLD** you that you would fly first!! :)

Hope to see it in Columbia when the Phase I is complete.

James
