Need part for Master Relay... stuck out

Vans sells the continuous duty relay for the master at 20.00. That's the part I need but right now I'm stuck out and am trying to find an auto parts store one. No time to order from Van's.

Of course the auto parts store wants a make and model.

Any out there know what the Napa or Shucks part or what vehicle uses this part?

Of course taking the part to them and saying I need a continuous duty 12v relay I got a blank stare with each counter guy wanting to know what it is off of.

Where are you stuck at? If you are in SoCAL, I have one in my hangar.

Where in WA are you stuck? The weather around Vancouver sucks or maybe I could go get it and bring it for you. If you?re near buy we could just drive to Van?s.

Napa

The NAPA part #ST85 is a 80 amp continuous duty solenoid which should get you home. You will have to do a little wiring. It will need a power (hot all the time) feed run from the battery side of the contactor to one of the coil terminals (it has 2 unlike the vans unit) so the ground input (hooked to the other) from your master switch will pull it down. Only problem is the thing is $50 bucks:eek:

Symptoms?

Dear Stuck Up Near Seattle:

What are the symptoms of the relay? Is is stuck open? Have you tried hitting it with a mallet, a chock, or something reasonably hard? Many have successfully "fixed" their master relays in the field this way just to get home.

Also look at some of these NAPA solenoids for Ford Trucks at http://bit.ly/4AsSnZ. The regional NAPA warehouse is near where you are stuck. BTW, I'd pay more and get a "master relay" rather than "starter solenoid", because the duty cycles are different.

I agree. Sometimes you can just whack them with a mallet and make it get it to work good enough to get home.

I have one from Van's that I haven't installed yet and won't need for a while, but you'd have to get up here to Woodinville to pick it up.

Just a follow up on this I ended up getting a Cole Hersee part# 24143. I went to a big auto electric place. 24143 is similar to Cole Hersee part# 24115 except it has silver contacts instead of copper and is rated to handle over twice the amperage through the contacts. Another difference is one side of the coil is hot wired to the bat-in side of the relay on the 24115. On the 24143 you have to add a jumper wire to create the same function.

Have you tried the local A&P at Crest, Glenn Patterson? He's a good guy, and usually has lots of stuff laying around.
