I had Aircraft Engravers make a bunch of placards from 0.020" Lexan. The paint and engraving is on the reverse face, so they should be more or less impervious to scratches. In this photo you can see how the color varies with changing lighting - it's a little more reflective than a painted panel, but still looks good, I think.
These are .050" aluminum plates that were painted with white solvent based JefFlex then with brown JefFlex. Aircraft Engravers engraved through the brown layer into the white to yield what you see.
These have been in service for 6 years / 650 hours.
i had the same thing done as matt did. i got a hold of the material and drilled all the holes and then shaped the panels [placards, whatever] and then sent in the panels to be engraved. happy with the results. panels fit as good as you made them and a lot cheaper.
