We live on moffet and hear that thing running all the time. Not interested in leaving the current job, but do you guys have a hard time pulling in people with the other Silicon Valley aerospace startups in the area?

It can be a bit tough to find people. There is that draw of the aerospace startups here for sure and we do lose some to those. The people that are here love the fact that it's a small team (less than 60 people) and people are pretty free to help out in most areas. It's also a unique facility and neat that it is still a viable test facility after all these years. It's run by the USAF and they are committed to keeping it open so it's a lot more stable than start ups. We have a lot of upgrades planned for the next several years.

We get to test a whole array of stuff. We test rotorcraft, fixed wings, the parachute for the latest Mars mission, semi-trucks, jet engines...you just never know what will come our way. The lack of cookie cutter tests is another reason why people stay here.

BTW, you'll be hearing more testing in our 40x80 tunnel in a couple of weeks. Also, there are smaller tunnels nearby that we don't have anything to do with that are quite loud. You could also be hearing them.

Do you have a POC for companies that want to come do some testing? We currently use a semi-trailer mounted wind-box to do our cross-flow testing, but are quickly outgrowing its capability. We have some new parts coming down out next year that will likely require an actual wind tunnel to get the data we need. Would be nice to get an idea of lead times and ball park pricing for getting into one of the tunnels.

Electrical Engineer posting soon

Any plan to replace the missing fan blades?

Yep. We are working on getting the bucks for that. Once we get the thumbs up it may take a few years to complete that effort. Instead of just duplicating the existing blades we are leaning towards improving performance. This all will be a pretty huge and interesting effort.
