Sweet plane and nice weekend get a way. How far is the airport to the lake house? and do you keep transportation between?

This was a rented house. Just had the inlaws pick us up. The guy at the airport said you could have someone pick up by boat if needed.

SML is a true gem. 500 mile shoreline, 40 miles long it is pretty big. One of the best bass fishing spots on East Coast. I have a vacation home there and keep my RV4 hangar end at W91.

Lots of rental houses available from tiny cabins to mega-mansions. Google Smith Mountain Lake for details.

The is a bed and breakfast under construction that will probably be open next year I suppose owned by an RV4 driver.

Transportation can be a challenge and you will need a car as grocery stores, etc demand transport from wherever you end up staying. Drive to house from airport can be anywhere from walking distance to 20 miles as look at a map will tell you.

Other options to Flyin with greater infrastructure are KROA or KLYH which are less than hour drive depending on where on the lake you end up staying.

For a trip back to real grass roots flying where you can rent a J4 Cub ( rare side-by-side model) for something like $30 wet that was flown around perimeter of US by legendary Rucker Tibbs and has probably soloed 1000 students give or take, stop in to New London Drag Strip (W90). Check notams as field might be closed on some weekends as they still race there.

These are my old stomping grounds and where I first tasted flight (in that same J4) in 1965 when I was nine years old.

Let me know if you are coming and ill show you around.

W90 Flyin is 9/15. Let your kids enjoy flour bombing from the open door of a J3. Flying the way it once was and, for awhile yet still hangs on
