...get'n it started. I'm down for annual (LED landing lights (AeroLEDs) going in - a little closer to the lens than the originals and with Monkey's fabbed bracket we can use the existing holes and nutplates). Less work!

I plan on flying my RV-12 tomorrow, Easter Sunday, to celebrate 50th anniversary of my first solo 4-4-71.

If weather is good tomorrow, and flight happens as planned, I'll post some pics.

Finally switched my EFIS airspeed display to knots (was mph). Wrote down several important speeds. Took the plane up to run several power on/off clean/landing config stalls to note the airspeeds.

Oh and I tried the new comms in my MS22001 O2 mask. They worked great as well.

Avoided fires while I continue with phase 1 testing.

Also, the first time I have ever intentionally shut the engine off in flight! I feel like my glide numbers are actually useful now. :D

Flew to Greenville, SC (KGMU) with my bride to have lunch with our daughter, son-in-law, and 6-yr old grandson at the Runway Cafe and watch him enjoy the aviation-themed playground. I may be biased, but I think mine is the best looking plane in the row.

Flew from San Diego to Santa Paula (KSZP) to enjoy lunch with a friend and his daughter. Very nice flight up and back, a busy day in Santa Paula, and a packed airport restaurant!

Flying up to KSZP, as I flew over KLGB, I flew over Plummit as he was on short final in his RV-10. :D

Let the autopilot fly the published missed approach on an ILS -- on all previous approaches, ATC assigned the missed approach instructions, so this was a first. Also used synthetic vision and highway in the sky, just for familiarization, although I never use either routinely. And, of course, read the manuals before the flight for familiarization and after the flight for confirmation. Also tried a new function on the ground after landing.

I'm still amazed with how busy things can get right after takeoff. Flying the glass requires currency just like tailwheel does...

But...but...why?

Only way to get true glide numbers. You can also see how big of a difference there is between fine and course pitch! After a bit of data collection, push the mixture back in and she fires right back up. Just make sure you are within glide of an airport and your ability to dead stick it in! Lol

Using my RV-12 to celebrate 50th anniversary of first solo…

I soloed April 4,1971 when I was in high school. My father flew a B-17H in WWII and he taught me to fly - this was after he and I rebuilt a 1946 Aeronca Chief. I flew 80 hours in the Aeronca and had to sell it to pay for college. After I got married, my father and I partnered in a nice J-3 Cub which I kept for 23 years, 1100 hours, and a lot of memories. Five years ago, I traded the Cub for a flying RV-12 and never looked back.

So today, Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021 is the 50th anniversary of my first solo. My father passed in 2008 - I have his USAAF Pilot Wings that my mother pinned on him, displayed on the RV-12 instrument panel. To celebrate, today I flew my RV-12 round trip to West Virginia - 250nm. My wife held up Easter dinner until I arrived home.

Beautiful day. I miss you Dad...

Sunday RV traffic

Looks like more than a few RVs are enjoying Easter the RV way <g>.

Flew to Cottonwood, AZ

In an attempt to beat the 90+ degree heat in the Phoenix area, I flew from Falcon Field to Cottonwood for breakfast Saturday morning with friends (two Long-EZs and a VariEze).

Still, it got plenty warm during the walk back to the airport in spite of Cottonwood's 3560' elevation. No matter: I enjoyed my first "sit-down meal" in a diner (Annie's) in over a year.

Return to the Valley was hectic.. Falcon Field is at the end of the magenta line in the EFIS screenshot below. One friend said Falcon Field traffic was the busiest he has ever seen.

I was wondering who that was up there....

We flew to L35 today and ended up with 2 RV-10's, a 7A and a 6A.

Plane Tracker missed me! I was up flying my RV-7 today around the Branson MO area.

I spent the weekend learning a valuable lesson about quality tools!

Nice trip to see friends in NC. Flew Friday to KSPA into a 30 kts headwind. Thank goodness I don't fly a 172. Perfect weather both directions and good time with friends.
2:45 flight rather than a 10 hour drive. Got to love it.

We drug the airplane out and spent some quality time with a hose and bucket of soapy water. Her once per year bubble bath to strip off the first layer of oak pollen.

Saturday coffee and planes

Wife and I flew our 6a from KHOT to KMWJ for the coffee and donuts. Stopped at KTKI and used the crew car to go to Plano for the first sit down meal in over a year, then back to KHOT.
