Farmington NM, trout fishing, no luck

they have too much water and were releasing it from the dam and that made for poor fishing. delivered one to Wichita and picked up another in El Paso. flying into El Paso (Dona Anna airport, 5T6) in the late afternoon, I was blinded by the sun and dust. water temperature was 40F. cheap lightweight waders make you talk like a girl.

after heavy overnight rain in Wichita my radio indicated a stuck mic and I suspected water on the contacts. not sure how it got there but it did. I connected my handheld and proceeded onward. at the Tucumcari fuel stop I reconnected the coax to the primary radio and it worked fine after that.

on the return leg, again in Wichita after more rain, I sumped the tanks and found about a teaspoon of water in both sides.

I haven't had much luck fishing anywhere in New Mexico. Tried Cochiti Dam. Same problem. Water temp 40.

I came thru Tucumcari also. Pretty remote place. I avoided all of the rain in Texas, luckily.

Hope you had fun though. I did on my recent trip West.

the trip was good. I'll do it again in the future. one thing to be careful of is hail in the Springtime in TX, OK and KS. on the return day layover in Wichita they were reporting 2 inch hail South of Wichita and tracking inbound. I phoned Jabara airport and told them to put the plane inside.

I used to fish the San Juan just below the dam quite a bit when stationed in Albuquerque. It was "feed lot" fishing. You could see them in the water. We used San Juan worms, a piece of red chenille on a hook, and slowly drug it by their noses. 5-10 five pound fish a day (catch and release) was normal.

I tried the San Juan worm and everything else that was recommended by Abe's. the water was high and that may have been the problem.

cheap waders will make you talk like a girl for about a week.
