What did you do w/your RV this weekend? (4/17/21 - 4/18/21)

I had the honor of leading a missing man flight over a funeral at Cavanaugh Flight Museum Saturday afternoon at Addison airport. Special thanks to Rob Reece for coordinating with the appropriate folks to come up with a plan for ingress and egress in Addison’s class D. It’s a tightish fit between DFW and DAL with a 4-ship and the class B floor is 2,500’ - having #3 ‘go west’ calls for finesse.

RGNL APPR and TWR made it painless and we are grateful that TWR stopped arrivals and departures for us for two minutes so we could get in and out so easily. With not a lot of room to work with, Smokey, Monkey and Steely were rock solid wingmen in the bumps and 180* steep turn, helping pull off a nice pass that hopefully brought a smile to the faces of those mourning. A satisfying use of the RV for sure. Amazing hardware and a wonderful community.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Jay Elwin Shannon. Veteran US Air Force.

I flew my RV14A to SnF

Easy flight until the end when we ran into a line of thunderstorms and had to maneuver to avoid them. Gotta love central FL (sarcasm).

Yet Another Pilots n Paws Mission

"Pluto" needed a ride from Gadsden, AL (KGAD ) to Beaufort, SC (KARW) to meet the Noah's Ark rescue lady. He will get some surgery on his shoulder in Charleston next week. He was a really sweet dog and a good passenger despite all his past troubles.

#1 RV and #3 RV on the ramp

At KSFQ for breakfast. First time parked side by side. RV-#1 (RV-8A) is meticulously maintained by its new owner, Tom Doran. RV #2 (RV-10) is someplace in Florida enjoying the good life. RV #4 (RV-10) is still in progress.

Add Another PnP Mission for the Weekend

Three small puppies needed a ride to a foster in Austin from George West, TX. They will be headed to New Jersey via a regularly scheduled ground transport in a few week. Mom stayed behind for heart worm treatment and will be following later. Apparently the treatment runs $200 in south central Texas and over $1000 in New Jersey.

I was finally able to connect with a friend on this flight. She chose to try out the CQ1, with the knowledge she could go back to a Lightspeed on the way home if she didn't like it. The Lightspeed stayed in the case on the way back.

There were two twin turbo-props on the ramp today at teeny-tiny Live Oak County Airport. (background of 2nd to last pic) Hmm, I wonder just how many PnP passengers they could carry. Next time I need to figure out how to put a flyer under the wipers. :D

Congrats. No more playpen? You gotta bring it down to Intokern when there is free ice cream again. I’ll treat you to a scoop.

I wanna see how beautiful metal working can be; i have spent too much time looking at mediocrity.

Last Monday I flew from 8D4 (Sparta Michigan) to Sun N Fun, camping inHBC leaving this Friday for KLOM Wings Field Philadelphia for my grandson’s birthday. Will be leaving here in a couple of days for either home or Montgomery AL to see some more grand kids.

The trip down to FL was totally uneventful and the arrival info SNF was basically straight in. ATC called me out by my N# when still about 10 miles out and right in! No holds or any delays!

Camping in HBC was great, they really took care of us and we ended up hanging out with old friends we don’t get to see very often. Promised to meet them at OSH Kosh in July. Going to be fun!

Left SNF on Friday in marginal weather all the way to NC where I stopped for a rest and to top off the tanks. Upon leaving discovered a flat on my right main. Pulled it apart with the local mechanics help and couldn’t find anything wrong. Inflated the tube and used a water tank to find a hole but no bubbles! What the heck? Put it back together and reinfected it and put it back in the tank and again nothing! Mounted it and adjusted the pressure to 45 lbs then took a half hour to clean up and rest then rechecked the pressure and no change! Again what the heck?

Launched for Philadelphia and was well guided around the DCA, Camp David, and the presidential TFR over Philadelphia into Wings field in a light rain just at sunset. As soon as I landed and set the front gear down, I discovered that the right main was obviously flat again! No issues controlling the landing but with two on the approach behind me I guided it off the runway into the grass. Called Unicom and help was on the way and they closed the runway to further landings. I was happy to see that the pants were undamaged when I removed them. We were able to air it up and tow it to a tie down spot for the weekend.

Tomorrow morning we will remove the tire again and the FBO thinks they have a tube of the correct size or we will find and temporarily patch the tube hole. It got to be there! Will also inspect the inside of the tire!

Plan to leave Monday night or Tuesday morning ahead of the snow storm hitting Michigan Tuesday afternoon.

So far, even with the tire issues, this has been a really good trip with many old friendships reconnected and impressed by all those who willingly dropped everything to lend a hand when needed. I will add the final paragraph in a few days when I am home.

Pretty cool weekend at my airport - KHAO - Butler County Regional Airport, Hogan Field - in Ohio. We had the Commemorative Airforce C-47, along with a couple of airplanes from the Cincinnati Warbirds (B25, P51), and several local aircraft, including my RV4, on static display. The C-47 was giving rides to locals, and anyone that showed up, for 3 days. All flights were sold out. It was a great weekend, and today (Sunday) the weather was beautiful. My friend Kevin Carroll - Boeing Stearman owner, and RV8 builder went on a ride in this historic C47. This C47 is the actual aircraft that lead the squadron of 800 aircraft on the invasion of Normandy in 1944.

Unfortunately the video file of the DC3 takeoff/landing didn’t upload, but the sound of those radials isn’t something that anyone will ever forget. What a perfect day.

Of course the pics are sideways. I don’t know how to fix that......

Ya, I only got a 45 mile radius which an RV eats through pretty easily. Now I can actually go somewhere!

I'm hoping to make as many rounds as I can this summer, it's going to be a busy one!

Got to take my dad (first passenger) up to Cody, WY for some coffee.

Sun N Fun

Went to Sun N Fun for 1st time! Many highlights to the week....

1) Traveling with my friend and RV mentor for week of aviation fun!

2) Getting to see some beautifully built RV's (Like Darwin Barrie's RV-7).

3) Getting to meet a LOT of really nice folks. Including the new owner of the AOPA RV-10!!!! Yes, someone was able to purchase it from the sweepstakes winner! Lucky man! (And a REALLY great guy too)

4) Getting an invite to awards presentation (who'd a thunk-it!)

5) Walking away with Reserve Grand Champion! (still hard for me to believe)

6) Getting to meet with the many people who helped make it all possible. (Like Jonathan at Evoke Aviation, Jason and Andre at Aerotronics, the folks at Van's aircraft, etc...)

Hard to beat a week like this!

Crawled face first into the hellhole (repeatedly) to install a stringer across a belly panel which has been vibrating enough to start a few smoking rivets.

After 66 trips around the sun, a few of which involved throwing myself on the ground at 100 plus, folding to squeeze my frame into the tailcone of an RV-8 is way up there on the hurt list...

Congratulations Jereme!

Awesome, can't wait to join you in phase 2. 45 NM? I think I owe my DAR a beer- I got 100NM.

Ran out of shampoo on Sunday. The closest Walmart by the airport is Blackfoot Idaho. Weather good, tanks full, let's roll...

Take off from Dutch John UT 33U. Nice view of Flaming Gorge.

Awesome pics Vlad!!!

Congratulations Jereme! What a satisfying milestone. Thank you for all your posts that have helped my build!

Thanks David, glad I could help! :D

Awww ....very cute that Vlad uses Mango and potent Aloe shampoo.

I bet all the pilots and mechanics where he lands remark on his shiny,
healthy-looking hair.

:) Just teasing.
