Default North Dakota flying?

Hello.

My wife and I are flying up to northern Minnesota in June and neither one of us have ever been to North Dakota and thought it would be interesting to visit. At the moment we are planning on the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Any recommendations on where to stay in that area? Also are there any other places in the state we shouldn't miss?

We are planning on going to SD as well to visit a missile silo. We've already done the main attractions around Rapid City such as Mt Rushmore, Black Hills, Badlands, and Wall Drug.

Thanks!

Default Peace Garden

The International Peace Garden has an airport on site and was a fun way to spend an afternoon with my daughter.

It straddles the border and had some interesting things to see.

Default North Dakota Airports

North Dakota is the only state I have not been to so am planning an overnight there enroute to PA (FWQ) from CA (IYK) in June in my -8A (just because I have a magic carpet and I can).

Don't really know anything about ND. Anyone have airport suggestions? Not looking to sight see - just courtesy car or ride from airport to a nearby motel that is close to a restaurant.

I've flown into Dickinson ND (near the park) a couple of time and had a wonderful experience both times. They have a courtesy car available, great FBO with good people, a very large hangar which they will offer space if needed (and with the hail/thunderstorm threats in the summer you might want that). Easy airport to get into with multiple runways. The wind can be a factor there but the multiple runways give you options. Relatively large town with lots of hotels and food options.

There used to be a bunch of guys restoring world war II airplanes in Wahpeton at the airport, not sure if they still are, haven't been there since I was a kid. the main guy behind it had an accident in his P-51 probably 10 years ago. and I don't know if they've continued on without him.

Default 37N

Garrison Dam Recreational Airpark is a good visit. There is fish hatchery within walking distance. They are raising the endangered pallid sturgeon, among other cool fish. Educational and enjoyable. Hiking trails there too.

Default ND Passport Program

North Dakota is one of the states that has a ?passport? program...if one wants to bounce around the state a bit, get a passport and get it stamped to win prizes/awards:

https://aero.nd.gov/education-progra...sport-program/

Good list of the state programs available here:

Jerry, regarding the Missile Museum...the wife and I made a trip to Rapid City a couple of years ago and the museum was worth the trip out to see it...but be advised, we were unable to book space on a trip out to where the actual silos were, even though we arrived ~10am...all the tour slots were already sold out. Early birds sucked ?em all up...

On our way back to RC, a stop in Wall, SD at Wall Drug was worthwhile. Kitschy, but a good place to get a bite and souvenir shop:

Have fun!

Hey Guys,

Thank you all for your suggestions and ideas! My wife likes the idea of the Intl Peace Garden as a side trip on the way to the Theodore Roosevelt NP.

Rob, yes I saw that you can book the trip to the silos 90 days out, so that's what I did. Thank goodness, most slots for the days we wanted to visit were already sold out a week after the 90 day window started.

Should be a fun trip!
