Just landed in KLKR after flying our RV6A for the very first time ever and I finally get the RV Grin! Congrats to you all...what a great aircraft it is! Easy to fly, docile, responsive and FAST, I am Extremelly impressed...coming from KCRG to KLKR we were at 7500 msl. My indicated was 178 knots (+3 tail wind) wow! 7.5 gph!!!

CONGRATS!

Mitch,

Congrats on the -6A!

Did you sell the G202?
. No bill. Im keeping the Giles. Bill and i went to PU the rv6a and he can tell you all about it how impressed he was with this little bugger! He was in the chase 8 . I see people already start questioning facts mentioned and thats OK...i dont care if they dont believe one word I say!

178 Knots indicated at 7500 feet burning 7.5 gallons an hour is really outstanding performance. Perhaps the best I have heard of in a RV. Does the aircraft have a lot of drag reduction mods?

I have no clue...this is the first time ever having flown an RV after my checkout and the chase RV8 flying off my wing kept asking how i was getting all that performance. I had the aircraft perfectly trimmed and coordinated. Throtle firewalled and LOP mixture. My gps said 3 knots qt tail wind, same as reported in fltplan... That,s why i am impressed! I fly a Giles 202 and i only dream i can get this type of cruise performance ant thus economy level....wow!

Funny how some people just try to ruin your grin!

Mitch its not bursting your grin. Fact is, your not getting 178KIAS at 7500' LOP at 7.5gph.
Once you get some time on her and do some calibration, come back and let us know what was off.
No one is giving you a hard time Mitch. When you put your numbers on a forum they are there for scrutinity.
Glad to see you finally got an RV.

Congrats Mitch!

A RV and A Giles!? Shouldn't be legal to have both! WAY to much fun for one man.

Good luck,

Scott

Another success!

Super for you. Flying the -6 is a pleasure. You will appreciate it every time you fly. Enjoy the reward of flying your RV!!

It gave me the very same feelling and it remind me the first time I flew the Citation X...FL500 mach.92 sipping 700 lbs a side...that one i do have a picture!

May I ask what is normal for an RV6A? Obviously I have sparked something here unintentionally.....I,m researching this one today...!

You might be right Kahuna...i was jus reporting what i saw as a first timer....now, i know i can calibrate the A/S indicator, but how do i calibrate two separate and independend GPS Units one showing 205 mph and the other 178 kts...

You may call Red and ask him..he was chasing and the one that kept saying WTH are you doing...for me i thought it was normal and the grin kept getting better and better....

.....yup confrimed +3 tail wind...thats it...

I'll bite :D

If it is accurate in static, and it has an EFIS with a calculated TAS then 178KTAS is very believable.

Perhaps the ASI is actually in MPH ?

Otherwise the TAS would be well over VNE

Top dog!

Mitch, you just discovered what I've said all along....the -6 is the best flying of all the RV's and I'll probably get some heat for that, but I've flown them all, except the -3.

They generally will run Van's numbers if they're built straight and rigged properly, often exceed them too.

I'd sure like an aero ride in your Giles....trade you for some left seat time in my -10 :)

Best,

I'm just smiling

I'm proud of you and your RV-6A. We built our RV-6A and I do all the speed testing at 6,000 density altitude, WOT, max RPM (~2720), leaned for best speed, three legs (360, 120 and 240), trimmed hands off level flight autopilot controlled direction and altitude, 20 second interval recordings of stabilized speed with no variation of more than + 1 kt and results processed in the NTPS spread sheet. My initial speed was 170.67 kts and with a lot of experimental speed mods the best speed I have seen is 184.4 kts. So your speed is certainly in the ballbark. Before the 2010 AirVenture Cup race from Mitchell, South Dakota to Oshkosh I was concerned about my ability to make it without the tip tanks (a 1.5 ft wingspan penalty) so I did test the fuel burn under these conditionsat 6,000 ft density altitude and the result was just under 14 gph so I rounded up and determined the ground speed I would have to maintain to make it with a 0.5 hr reserve with the no tip tank capacity. It worked out fine. I will now go to the SARL site (www.sportairrace.org) and get the RV-6A race speeds in kts from one of the records and stats files and reprint them here (the RV Reds are 320 powered and the RV Blues are 360 powered):

As chase plane, I'll update...we had 25-30kt tailwind. MV ran full out. Previous owner fltplans 9 gph, so 7.5 was me @ 17" MP. the 6A has 160 hp, so 140k + no wind cruise is about right...was fun indicating 174k gnd speed for 2 hrs, tho. Reno Red. ( BTW, Speedy-Team RV has 160 hp RV-6 & walks away from me w/ an 8...180 hp, guess i better go back to the drawing board...those 160hp sixes are hot.

Wow, that is impressive! I only wish my 6A could post those numbers.

My normal cruise is 155 kts (178 MPH) @ 7500' on about 8.2 GPH. On paper I've always thought of my RV as being somewhat slow as compared to numbers others report. I have however flown along side several other RV's and I always have similar numbers (RPM, MP and speed) causing me to believe my plane is about average. One thing that reinforces my belief is to look at "Flight Aware" from time to time. Generally RV-6's and 7's on "Flight Aware" post cruise speeds in the range of 150-160 Kts (when wind is taken out of the equation)!

If you've got a "magic bullet" please pass along the secret, "inquiring minds want to know".

No need to justify to anyone!

Hey Mitch I flew that airplane for the last four years...no need to waste any more time putting numbers to paper! It is what it is! Obviously all the negativ remarks are coming from those who don't have the right set-up...LOL

Where did you get that tail wind from? HAHA...i guess my E6B need recalibrating too!!!!!!!! checking FLTPLAN and all other available reports w/Ipad during flight It was showing +3 !!!! I enjoyed flying with you loose formation from CRG to KLKR...

engine is an 0-320-D2J S/N L-11144-39A 160HP (it came out of a Cessna so it was problably tired of flying slow!!!!)

Prop is a cruise FP Sensenich model 70CM7S9-0 (here is where I think is the major difference)

Maybe it is the FAST WAX Joe cleaned his aircraft with and sells! (I just visited his web site for the first time)

Mitch

I have flown a nice, slick RV6 not 6A that has an O-320 and fixed cruise prop, and it is quick, but not that quick, no matter what I do.

IAS=178 knots at 7500 feet is a TAS of 198knots.(230MPH)

VNE = 210MPH or 181 knots

Can you please explain how you are able to cruise at 7500 feet and be within 3 knots of VNE based on dynamic pressure and 17knots over VNE for TAS (equals flutter margin gone)

If you can actually do it, you had better stop, but I just can't see it being possible.
