Introducing ?Tsamsiyu?

I am not going to jump on the bandwagon of great things to say about your amazing airplane. I am just to jealous to be nice!

Toruk or Ikran

I guess I am now wondering who will come out with "Last Shadow?"

You know, we pondered for months whether to make Junior into an Ikran or a Toruk. After all, the Valkyrie is red and female mitochrondrial DNA usually prevails. In the end, however, we decided the lone, every day, smaller mount model better fit our -3 than the "Last Shadow". But, it was a hard choice as a Toruk paint scheme might be even more amazing (and I bet Shark is just salavating at the potential). I think an -8 (2-seater) painted that way would be outstanding. Unfortunately, we aren't currently considering an -8 build. So, the idea is out there for the taking.....

We can't wait! It will be a fight for who gets the fly the mission. (Despite Paul's claim that I have first dibs on Tsam, he's taking it off on xc for the next week so we know how true THAT statement really was.)

I will mediate the fight, and if you can't come to terms, I'll fly it! ;)

If it is coming to MN, you will fly right over MCW.. Stop in! I have hangars, bed, and beer....

Great!

Yes, spectacular. Nice.

Now, can you please change back out of those scary avatars? Every time I see that avatar, I think, "Uh oh, what did I do now?"

Awesome!!

WOW is absolutely right! I don't know what I expected, but the result completely blew me away.

Now if you could just make it to KOGD on the 31st...that way I could see both the RV-1 and the RV-3 that made me want to build a -3 in the same day. I am of course being completely selfish here.;)

Tsam Sighting Soon?

Paul and Louise,
What a great paint scheme!

Looking forward to seeing Tsam on Tuesday with The One!

Mike

The Inspiration

Apparently some of you have not seen the movie "Avatar." It has some fine flying scenes.

Got back from a trip to find that Junior is all grown up and has taken her adult name.

Superb design and beautiful execution. I especially like the way the cowling cheeks are made to look much less prominent.

And my wish for you is: may it never need retouching.

Dave

Where'd you get those images?????

Larry,
I've tried to find such good images of the Ikran but I didn't succeed. Thanks for posting!

It's gorgeous, now I need to watch the movie again.

One question: What are you going to write when it asks for "Aircraft Color / Markings" on the flight plan form?

- mark

It is a new color, Tsam! I love your plane. Have a great flight to MN, Tsam will look great in the north woods.;)

Not sure about those images, but...

Anything watched, played or viewed on the iPad can have a screen capture. Quality is very good.

Hold home button down and click power button.

PS love the colors!

Paul and Louise,

Congrats on getting your RV3 out of the paint shop. I know how rewarding it can be to build an airplane then get your airworhiness certificate. But it's never really 'finished' until you get it painted the way you want. Coming up with a paint scheme can be one of the hardest parts of the project. It's a big decision. It's real easy to copy or modify someone elses paint scheme but it takes a lot more to use your own creativity. You've certainly achieved that. Like many others, I think it's pretty cool. It's kinda funny because I can't see someone copying your new paint scheme anytime soon....this one BELONGS to you guys :).

That said, I once read a post where Louse said that they were building their airplane to be a 'flyer' and not to be a 'show plane'. Sometimes a 'flyer' can turn out nicer than expected and and is doomed to have a 'judge me' sticker on it at the big show. My very first RV6 was going to be a 'flyer' and it won at Oshkosh and Grand Champion at Sun 'n Fun. I hope Paul and Louise reconsider and let the judges have a look at it.....big smile :):).

Plan ahead on your fuel stops....they will take a good hour more than what you were used to....you may want to call ahead and arrange crowd control :D.

Again....congrats guys....very unique and well done!!

Is this something like how Mia Farrow feels?

My husband just ran off with our daughter, Tsam! He claims he'll be back in about 5 days but his look of lust towards that girl has me very worried that I may never see either of them again! Maybe I should ask for an Amber Alert at airports between Houston and St Paul? ;)

Rick, thank you for the very kind words. After seeing the paint job part way through, I relinquised and told Paul that we could hang a "judge me" sign on the plane. We owe that opportunity to the GLO Custom folks and a bunch of vendors that helped us through the build. And, Paul has some really nice design elements that deserve attention. But, it was half built by someone with no significant experience in a shop (I didn't even have the experience of failing shop like some VAF builders since girls weren't allow to take shop at my schools) and there are lots of little workmanship flaws that Paul graciously allowed me to make. So, if there is a "10 at 10" award, Tsam is a strong contender! And, yes, it will be a flyer (as evidenced by Paul's departure to the other side of the country).

A couple of people have asked and, yes, we intend to have Tsamsiyu at AirVenture and she is scheduled to fly in the RV Parade on Monday morning, excorting Van in the RV-1 up to AeroShell Square (or whatever name it has this year).

As for the pronunciation, we watched part of Avatar last night and one of the character almost chants the word several times in the Rookery scene: Tsam (as you would expect, a slight "t" before "Sam") Si (as in, Si, Si Senor) Yu (as in "you"), with the accent strongly on the last syllable.

PS. Thanks, Scott

Not having kids around, I haven't really figured out how to fully use the iPad. Now, if I knew how to download a movie....

Ok I also do not normally like the over the top paint especially for re-sale but this one is different. Outstanding looking airplane.

Pat

Tsam (as you would expect, a slight "t" before "Sam") Si (as in, Si, Si Senor) Yu (as in "you"), with the accent strongly on the last syllable.

Considering your and Pauls new avatars, I would think the name "Ayesiyu"

would be rather appropriate;)

OK, so I am now siting in the northern suburbs of the Twin Cities, catching up after the first long cross-country in tsam...wow! Two-hop, with a stop in fort Scott Kansas for fuel. Had 9 gallons remaining (30 gallon capacity in a -3B) there and when I topped off at Anoka County. I must admit - the tailwind helped....

The funny part was that at fort Scott, a Turbine Lancair landed five minutes before me - everyone was crowded around it. I taxied up to the self-serve, filled up, went in to the rest room, came back out, walked right past the crowd to Tsam, got in and flew away - not a single person even acknowledged our presence. So much for being a ramp magnet....

(I did, however, notice that as I taxied beneath the tower at Anoka County, both guys in the cab we leaning over the window sill to see me taxi past...heh, heh, heh...)

Great cross-country machine - smooth, 167 -170 KTAS at 7500 burning about 7.2 gph. The prop balance was extremely noticeable (Walt Aranow balanced it the other day) - smooth like a turbine.

Paul

Turbine!!!

Paul

They were just Lancair Turbin biggots..... not to fret. Trust me. They looked at it when you were gone and then went back to the Lancair.

I can promise you us RV guys are drooling at your new plane!

Can't wait to see it next month at the Htown builders meeting.

OK now I seriously have I wantititis!

Now as I am consideing commuting to my new job by airplane and I only need 1 seat..Hmmmmmm...:)

Frank

Congrations Paul and Louise,
It has all been said. I just slobbering in admiration over your gorgious aircraft..
I will get there someday in this build.

I was quickly scanning over the VAF home page this afternoon, when my 3 year-old daughter came flying into the room on yet another whirlwind mission of fun 'n games. Tsamsiyu's photo came on-screen just as my daughter glanced over at the monitor. She stopped so fast, I swear I heard a squeal of skin-on-hardwood-floor. Her words?

"WOW!!! Daddy, is your airplane gonna look like that??!?"

Outstanding job!

Awww, Shucks - I suppose I am going to have to say well done, good job, awesome etc etc , as you Colonials evoke.......

We Brits take a while to catch on... ;)

M

Considering your and Paul's new avatars, I would think the name "Ayesiyu" would be rather appropriate;)

Mike is now in the running for an major award at Sun and Pun ;)

P&L; I like it. The other half of my brain (Patti) loves it!

Turbine lancairs get FBO perks because they ALWAYS need fuel and have to stop about every ten miles.
P.S. I don't really like Louise's new avatar, too scary. I did really like the spelunker girl one though.

Hello Paul and Louise. Been a while since I posted here. Had to log back in and tell you guys that the -3B turned out awesome! Very nice work!

Hope he's not crying.

Poor little Mickey, he gave you so much pleasure and now your going to sell him like an old pair of shoes. :( Hope he's not sitting in some dark hanger reading this thread! At least he's got a nice new shiny panel.:)

Actually, Mikey has flown more lately than the Val. He had his annual condition inspection last week (passed with flying colors!), escorted Tsam most the way home, and did my flight to Galveston this morning. And, we need to keep him until the Val gets her canopy replaced and her paint job spruced up (more trips to- and from 52F).

I'm not sure I'll be able to part with him. He is such a great plane and the market is so soft right now that we're thinking it might be better to keep him for now. He's for sale, but we aren't rushing into anything. I'll give him your regards!

Tsam is in another class

Only kidding Louise. :D Your new baby is overwhelming. I've seen a lot of outstanding paint jobs at "Osh" but tsamsiyu is mind boggling. Bet it ends up on the cover of SA. :)

Forgive me for dragging up an old topic but I joined the forum specifically to comment on this aircraft.

First off, an amazing aircraft and simply stunning painting. The layout of the ikran design along the curves of the aircraft is brilliant and the World War II style spitfire snarling nose is a stroke of genius. I'm incredibly envious and hope that this aircraft gets the praise and recognition it deserves. You have a one of a kind masterpiece and I hope it serves you well.

Secondly, as a pilot I'm incredibly happy to see such a lovely aircraft. However, as a huge fan of Avatar (the film) and the created Na'vi language I'm super impressed and excited. I'm one of the many people learning the Na'vi language, expanding it, and teaching others who are interested in learning. It's been a fascinating experience that has taught me a lot about languages, other cultures of the world, allowed me be on national TV ;), and has allowed me to meet some really fascinating people including the inventor of the language itself; Dr. Paul Frommer.

That's mainly why I wanted to post here. On our forum LearnNavi.org, which you mentioned before but it was during a period where the co-location facility for our server was having issues which resulted in damage to our server. It took us a few weeks to replace the damaged hardware but it was clearly unfortunately timed. "Very sad, only." In any case, one of our members (Roland from Germany) apparently stumbled upon your amazing aircraft and your interesting choice of name and posted it in our forum.

That's where I saw it and after some discussion I mentioned it to Dr. Frommer, who I've become friends with over the last few years. He commented back;

"To echo one of the commenters, "Wow! Just wow!" That is simply wonderful."

He asked if he could post it on his Na'vi Language blog, which you can find here.

Allow me to translate as he often writes much of his posts in Na'vi:

(My translations added in red)
Tsamsiyu a mì Saw ’Rrtayä! Warrior in Earth's Sky Warrior in Our Sky!

Fì’uti nivìn, ma smuk: Look at this, siblings (not literally, used to mean more "siblings in spirit") Tsamsiyu

Am’aluke ’erong Na’vi mì seng a eltur tìtxen si! :) Without a doubt Na'vi is being found in interesting places.

Oh, and yes, tsamsiyu was pronounced well by the actors in the film. "Tsam" is like the word "tsunami" but without the -un- part and the -i on the end. "si" is like the English word "see". "Yu" is like the English word "you" but without any of an "o" sound. The syllables are tsam-si-yu. Interestingly enough, your nickname "tsam" is also a word. It is the Na'vi noun for "war". Tsam + si makes the noun "war" into a verb (literally "make war"). The final "-yu" is a suffix that turns a word into the agent of the verb. In this case the "agent" of war is a warrior. :)

Oh goodness, I've managed to start teaching Na'vi again. I'll stop before I scare anyone off. ;)

However, let me just say this: "Oe tswìyevayon ngahu." (I will fly with you.) (Oh, that's a tongue twister.)

Welcome to VAF!

Welcome to VAF, Mighty Pirate. Careful mate'y, these waters get choppy sometimes!

I think I won the "1st welcome" contest again :D

Welcome mighty pilot!

Welcome !! There are lots of folks on this forum that can appreciate your perspective. I have seen the airplane in person. It is really cool. The inside of the plane ain't half bad either. Paul and Louise are clearly smart and intellectual folks that I'm sure would be happy to be called nerds.:).

If you haven't flown in a vans aircraft, please raise your hand. I'm sure someone in your part of the country would love to give you a ride. You will be hooked after your first ride! These are amazingly quick and efficient aircraft.

Thanks, Ian. We really appreciate the kind words and supportive comments. Watching Avatar, Paul and I both felt our incipient RV-3 would be the closest thing to bonding and flying an Ikran that one could experience on Earth. After flying it over a year, we still think that's true. Learning more about the Nav'i language and Tsam's "heritage" was fun. And, although neither of us have any aptitude for foreign languages, we certainly admire Frommer's work.

Thank you very much for sharing the information and links. Paul is busy helping Rosie switch out a cylinder or he'd would be chiming in.

Oh, BTW, you can tell the poster in Reno that Tsamsiyu will be moving to Dayton, NV, some time in the next year so he'll probably see her in the skies over Stead occasionally. For now, she is still based in the Houston area.
