Installing my optional access panels today. On seeing the mess I am making it would have been smarter to cover the canopy pistons to keep them from getting contaminated.

Better yet, cover everything underneath the work area. I'd be more upset about the swarf getting all into the crevices and joints between ribs, stiffeners, skin, etc.
 
In front of the windscreen on top of the fuselage just behind the firewall. Or another way of saying directly above the rudder pedals.

…or remnants getting into your electrical and avionics connections later down the road.
