Port Aransas Airport (KRAS) to Reopen Sat, 10/4/14

It was announced this morning that Mustang Beach Airport (KRAS) will reopen for DAYTIME OPS ONLY tomorrow at 0800.
No word yet on when it will resume 24/7 ops.
C'mon back to de island -- the weather is grand!
What did they have it closed for? Always love driving past the airport when I'm down there, always something cool to look at.

The City initially planned to close the airport to resurface the ramp, which has become a sea of tiny prop-grinding gravel, thanks to the decision by some non-aviation type to use highway chip-seal to reseal it a few years ago.
While they were at it, they got a grant from TXDot to redo the runway edge lights, and install a cable perimeter fence to keep the local goobers from driving on the runway to get to their favorite fishin' hole.
For reasons unknown, the money for ramp resurfacing was lost. For reasons known only to God, they closed the airport for 35 days anyway, just to only install the new, uber-expensive runway edge lights that no one wanted or needed.
So, after 35 days without an airport, it is reopening to daytime only operations completely unchanged, except for the runway edge lights which are...
...wait for it...
...not finished!
It is to weep. But, hey -- we've got a new security gate, with a code that every fisherman in Port A will know by the end of the week.
