Garmin SL40 Squelch Adjustment

On the Garmin SL40 when adjusting the receiver squelch which direction does one adjust if the desire is more signal to break squelch.

Stated another way:

Does a higher number mean more or less signal required to break squelch ?

The larger the number the stronger the signal must be to break the squelch.
