Coolant Loss…

Piper J3

Well Known Member
I notice a slight decline in coolant level in the overflow tank – maybe 1/16” to 1/8” change in level over 20 hours operation. I have removed cowling and looked for leak and found none. At end of flight coolant level is at fill line and when engine cools level is 1/16” to 1/8” lower.

I’d like to know if this is common and if other planes ae experiencing the same coolant loss.

Sounds normal to me -- the coolant level in the overflow tank will vary a bit depending on the temperature of the coolant. I would expect some slight loss of coolant over time due to evaporation and tank venting.

My overflow tank level creeps down roughly 1/4 inch between annual inspections. I have checked carefully for leaks and have never found any.
