Wheel Pant Attachment Bolt

Sometimes, this bolt in its original form, can be somewhat inconvenient to get started or safe tied - this is one way to help avoid those issues.

The pic shows a "custom" bolt I made for this job: 1/4-28 AN bolt with the head cut off, a companion nut "snugged" up against the shank (red locktite here) and a "thumb wheel" (think small gear shape) silver brazed to the end of the shank.

The thumb wheel provides a surface to install/rotate the bolt into the receiver of the axle nut. After initial fit up - pick the most advantageous alignment for the safety wire hole (the orientation of the standard AN4H-5A bolt can make safe tying difficult sometimes), and drill hole (.063" is OK) for .032" safety wire.

For installation in the field - if you have a hole in the WP to assist in the inflation of the tire, use that hole (if close enough) for access for one finger while another finger makes contact with the thumb wheel from the exposed front of the rear WP 1/2. Working together the bolt can be easily rotated to a finished condition.

YMMV

HFS - Sorry, don't know why the pic is on its side?

Switching my rv to these newer style wheelpants. Is there an issue with using a norlock washer here or will it come loose. Seems like a pain to have to safety wire anytime its off.
