Winter Fun Flying

Every winter there is a short flight that I simply have to make, and it is to inspect the fish houses on Lake Mille Lacs, about 30 RV minutes' north of the Twin Cities. I've linked to a crummy cell phone video we took today, to give some idea of the number of fish houses on this lake. I understand that there are more than 5,000 of them on the lake! This clip is shows only a small fraction of the whole lake, which covers about 200 square miles. All the little specks are fish houses, although many are trucks or other vehicles also.

Enjoy!

Good video! Looks very cold!

Thanks for sharing the video. Looks like a good place to visit - briefly! Does anyone land an RV on the lake?

Wax worms, colored jigs, minows. Poles are 1-3' long, very fexible so you can feel the bite. Everything moves slower.

Crappie, walleye, perch, bass, muskie, northerns, anything else that bites. ;)

Ice fishing is an art form up north. Some of the "ice shanties" are heated (no A/C needed :D ) , with beds, stoves, chairs, TV's. They were the first "man caves". ;)

We use to drive out to our fishing spots depending on the thickness of the ice, and how many other cars were there 45 years ago. I don't see any cars in the video so that might be illegal now. Maybe only snow machines, or ATVs? Some guys have lost vehicles for sure.

Yes, you can easily land on the ice, I have done it in NE, but latter found out it was illegal.

Thanks Alex, that brought back a lot of memories.

Now back you your regularly scheduled RV forum.

That was great Alex - brought back LOTS of memories of fishing with Grandpa on the north edge fo Millelacs (otherwise known - at least in the 70's - as the "dead sea"). I don't ever rememebr catching much, but the wood stove in the ice house was nice!

When I lived in the Minneapolis burbs my neighbor built a 24' x 12' Ice house in his driveway one summer, and had it hauled up to Mille Lacs on a flat bed. They would tow it onto the lake every winter after the ice thickens. The ice can get really thick, as in up to 3 feet. They sometimes plow roads and put up stop signs in crowded areas.

I have also heard that some of the "professionals" from the Twin Cities will come up and work the Ice houses, if you know what I mean.
