Manage oil shutter with EFIS

Recently I installed an Anti Splat oil cooler shutter. I use a Bowden cable on the panel to operate it. Has made an amazing difference to climb temperatures as I close it in climb and redirect all the oil cooler air to engine cooling. Has anyone set up a solenoid or similar on the oil cooler lever coupled to an EFIS to manage a temperature range? Using today’s technology I imagine it would be doable but out of my pay grade. I’ve though of using a spring so I never leave it fully closed. My present management is to leave my hand on the push/pull cable until I have the desired oil temperature.

So I am in the process of making my own shutter. While digging around looking at actuator options I found an automotive headlight adjustment servo that looks just right for the job. The position can be controlled via a potentiometer or variable voltage output (all the motor control stuff is built-in). It looks like a good option so I am going to play with it.

To your point, you could use a temp probe to control the position.

I’ve had two of the TCW servos system fail in as many years on my oil shutter. Once with the control and once with servo mech. While I really liked the control of the TCW servo system, I’m now using a cable with detented positions. The KISS principle. A failure with the shutter closed is a pain. Anti Splat recommended against the servo in this application when I discussed it with him but I went ahead with it anyway. He was right. I assume he has seen more than one failure.
