Default I have been scammed and its my fault!

The person requesting the funds represented himself to be Marshall Alexander. I just found out that Marshall had been dead since sept 2021. This person posted: https://vansairforce.net/community/s...d.php?t=200577
A Garmin SL30 for sale. I responded to an email address of jrs148855@gmail.com and paypal'd the money. Later, he had me cancel that transaction and asked that I sent a paypal gift transaction to mrsjesuschrist@live.com
I just found out the person that I thought I was dealing with is in fact dead. I have not received a tracking number or the item as they had agreed to.

It sucks to be scammed hopefully PayPal can do something to refund you.

One thing to consider is if the asking price is too good to be true. $2150 obo for a SL30 with tray is quite a bit under market price. These go for ~$3000 all day long. There were quite a few scammers on Facebook asking $6000 for a GTN or $4000 for a GNS-530W… the minute I called them out and posted a screenshot of an old matching eBay ad with a higher price the seller turned the comments off. It’s amazing how many people are asking how they can they buy or where to send the money. If the price is way below market price it’s probably TGTBT.

Use google or tineye reverse image search it will weed out half of these ads.

Very sorry you got hit. An unfortunate reality of the world we live in.

This is a good opportunity to remind everyone to never pay using "friends and family" through paypal, unless the person is exactly that. For added protection don't pay from you checking or paypal account, use your credit card, even if that means eating the 3% fee. Even if paypal tells you to stick it, your CC company may side with you and they have the real power when it comes down to it.

Related story:
I recently ordered a pretty expensive piece of equipment from overseas. Long story short, the seller tried to double-dip me on the shipping charges (an oversimplification, but imagine something similar to charging shipping, then sending COD). They were completely unwilling to discuss or negotiate and already had my money. However, I paid by credit card even though it cost me a couple hundred more than wire transfer. I initiated a merchant dispute and very quickly the seller became much more willing to discuss the issue. Got it resolved in the end and received my item.

Default From rv10mans daughter

Hi, all,

It was brought to my attention by some family friends that this was posted today about scammers using rv10mans account. I am his daughter, and we have not posted anything for sale on this site. I figured out how to log into his account this morning and have changed his email and password as well as messaged admin about this issue. It seems a lot of his accounts are being hacked recently unfortunately.

I apologize if anyone has been scammed with my dad’s account, but he passed away September 17. See his obit: https://www.bffuneralhome.com/obitua...#/obituaryInfo

Thank you,

Michela

Michela,
This is Steve Ingraham. I am sorry this is happening after all you and your family have been going through. I would like to help with this issue if I can. If you see this could you give me a call? You can call the number on the card I gave you in September or click on the link below in my signature. It has my phone number there.

Default Your own fault?

How in the world this can ever be your own fault?

You and another person (a scammer in this case) entered into a legal contract. This contract was even in writing in your case (message exchange). The scammer had no intention to fulfill the contract. Just to take the money and run. All over the world this is considered a crime. Where is your fault? You fulfilled your contractual obligations.

Please, stop blaming yourself. It is not your responsibility to vet the other party. The more your blame yourself, the more justification you give to the scammer to continue. It is not their fault that you got scammed, it is your fault that you did not spend your life doing research on them. Right?

File the police report to make them to investigate. They won't of cause. File the complaint with the attorney general. That is probably all you can do. Chances are slim, but that is not your fault. It is the fault of the people who scammed you and those who do not give a s..it to investigate and prosecute the crime. The latter just encourage the first to continue. Too sad...
