Deformation in my brand new Main Spar

salty

Well Known Member
Looking for advice on how to deal with this. It would be a shame to pay for shipping another for such a small problem, but I think it's a significant issue, just not sure how "fixable" it is.

It is definitely not the spar extension that is bent, it is the spar. Two obvious problems are the gap between the splice plates and the spar and the fact that the skin rivet holes are not properly aligned. I'm wondering if it's not a bigger problem beyond that even.

I will probably call Van's on how to proceed, but I'd like to hear what you guys think and having the images on the web will make it easier to explain to them.

I think Vans builder support should address this. Since this is the outter tip extension, the load is small compare to the inner root. I found a RV10 picture with the tip spar extension. This one isn't aligned either from the picture.

I had the same little offset. Just rivet the part on and bend the flange to match. Its all good once you add the ribs and skins.

Keep it going, I had the same as well during my build. I know at least two more builders who had the same way shaped wing extensions at initial spar rivet stage - it will disappear after you assemble the wing. :D

Had the same with both my spars. Everything lined up perfectly after riveting.
