Types of Breast Pumps

Although good breast pumps’ general function is to remove and collect milk from breasts, there are many different types of breast pumps. So, which one is the best choice?

Manual breast pumps

The best manual breast pump operates by hand. This means that you will side a cylinder back and forth or squeeze a trigger button to produce the suction that removes the milk from your breasts.

Despite its small size, it is cheap and easy to store and carry with you on any trip. I strongly recommend this choice for short-term use and occasional pumping.

In the case of a regular pump and the need for a significant amount of breast milk, this is not an ideal choice.

Battery operated breast pumps

You are in need of only one pump per day, even less but you don’t love using a manual pump, right?

The battery-operated breast pumps are your saver because it can overcome the manual unit’s weakness. This type of device is strong enough to stimulate milk production and maintain a milk supply.

Thanks to a small design, it’s portable and easy to use, but it requires you to replace batteries over time.

Electric breast pumps

On a regular basis, it’s better to invest in the best electric breast pump that is powerful enough to raise your milk supply.

This is the most efficient hands free breast pump because it is able to help you save plenty of your valuable time. However, it’s more expensive and requires a more powerful source.

Bulb-style pumps (bicycle horn pumps)

I don’t recommend these products in all cases because they are inefficient, unsanitary, even they are able to harm your breasts.

Used breast pumps

Although the majority of personal breast pumps are just designed for only one user, some specific breast pumps are allowed by more than one person to use. With these designs, while you can sterilize the whole breast pump, the parts that will directly contact your breast milk are disposable.

If using breast pumps is not your long-term solution, you can rent them or use them when you are in the hospital.

Remember never to reuse any model that you can’t wholly sterilize, including new breast shields and tubing due to the risk of transmitting an infectious disease.

It is vital to sterilize properly because you can’t determine how many people use and if they have a health problem.

If you want to be sure, you should talk to your doctor, who can help you determine which types of best breast pumps work best for your case?

Generally, you need to avoid using the bulb-style pumps (bicycle horn pumps), which will result in negative impacts on your health. If you want to rent a used breast pump, make sure that you can sterilize it. If not, a look-like new model can cause a risk of health problems. You had better pick up one based on your need for other choices: how often you use your breast pump and how much breast milk you need.
