Well dang 2nd AV-30 failed the other day in flight. Volts read 36.4 and as you can see in the pictures, my displays went out. Standard gauge was reading 14.4v . Installed 5/2020. Returned to the hangar, wouldn’t turn off, and had to pull it out and remove battery to shut off. Uavionix wanted it sent in because they never heard of this issue.

May 7th sent
May 9th arrived at uavionix
May 13th told gauge was definitely messed up and a new one would be sent
May 19th after nothing arrived I called and was told “I misspoke and the gauge hasn’t been evaluated but since it’s out of warranty it’d be 500.00 if it needs replaced.”

What a day. Lol

My first AV-30 would reset level while in a turn. Then when I leveled off, the horizon was crooked until it readjusted. I have video but it’s on another page. I really like this instrument, but a 3yr life span and I can’t trust it!! Not good!! I guess it was my turn in the “I haven’t heard of this ever happening,” column. I’ve been pioneering mystery problems since my model airplane days!! Haha

Voltage surge

Hoping someone smarter than me can answer this question. I’m being told that my gauge failed because of voltage surge with my plane. Is that a thing?? Everything is circuit protected and installed per manufacturer specifications and when it failed i immediately looked at my voltmeter which read 14.4v. If this is true how do i prevent this issue?? I’m checking on my alternator, but I’m sure it’s a lightweight/internal regulated kit from vans yrs ago. Thanks in advance

John

Yes. No other damage to anything and my main voltmeter read 14.4 while flying immediately after I noticed the AV30 read 36.4.

The specs say it could have handled 60v max. If I had a surge like that, I’d smoked my complete panel. Who knows. I’m sure I’m missing something, I just don’t want to smoke another one.
