Garmin will be ending WAAS upgrades for non-WAAS GNS 400/500

If you slide a 440 into a non-WAAS 430 tray

does it work?, and what do you need to do to take advantage of the 440 WAAS?
And, I did think it a good thing that Garmin will continue to maintain 430s for awhile (I have a 650 for No. 1, but the 430 non-WAAS is my #2)

Yes sir, that’s what I did. The only thing I had to change was the antenna to a WAAS antenna and the antenna cable to RG400. I made no othe changes, the connections to the GRT EFIS, TruTrak A/P, etc., needed no wiring changes.
Just remember to record (I used my cell phone camera) the settings in your 430.

I'm running the 430W now, and I won't replace it until it dies - but on that day I won't hesitate to put an Avidyne IFD-440 in its place.

The previous message about noting the 430W settings is valuable - I think I'll do that NOW rather than waiting until something fails, since I may not be able to power it up to see those settings once the magic smoke escapes.
