Tapered pilot countersink for elevator assembly

I'm reading through the elevator section again, and I'm curious why I need a tapered pilot countersink? Is the wedge for the TE different than the one on the rudder? I didn't use a special tapered countersink on that and all was well?

How much of a taper is needed?

Yes it is a different wedge. I just tapered the pilot to a point from the base and it worked well.
