I have just installed the heater cable but it won't allow the door to open. it seems like it is binding somewhere and I cannot pull out the knob on the cable.

That's good to know. Not a whole we can do to help. I suggest troubleshooting by disconnecting door first to see if cable behaves on its own. Keep us posted I guess...

Van's surely put that "comb" on the heater cable flex line for a reason (friction?), but mine sure seems to work fine without it (opens/closes easy & stays in either position)

The comb is used to adjust the cable friction as needed (and I think the KAI describes it) and it can be adjusted with slight bending to vary the amount.

If the cable has enough friction for the door to stay in any adjusted position without the added friction then it could be deleted but there is likely unexpected friction being induced by a non-standard routing or some other reason.

Mine seized last year, after 10 years. I replaced the cable, and all's well.
