Tail Wheel Bolt length incorrect on drawing?

So I have put this in Van’s support inbox but thought I would ask prior builders on here if they ran into this small issue with the tail wheel axle bolt stack up.

The stack up per the drawings does not provide proper space to install a cotter key.

The AN6-30 bolt either needs to be longer or should I move to a shear style castle nut?

Any other tailwheel builders run into this issue.

I’ve searched the archives as well as vans revisions and see nothing concerning this.

Thanks

Looks like an AN960-6L washer would get you were you need to be. L washers are the thin type, .016 versus.032 .

Hope this helps

It would appear that the washer on the head side of the stack up is not necessary (based upon observation, not experience). Try removing that and verify there are not interference issues. That might be enough to get the pin hole on the bolt exposed. A thin washer (L type) on the nut side instead of the STD would also help.

Bolt looks too short

Hi, just my 2 cents but I would do the buildup just like the drawing but with a bolt of the proper length. After that it's correct and worry free which is what you would want on all your installs.
BTW, the stock tailwheel on my 9 has an an960 under the head of the bolt and under the nut, approx 1 1/2 threads showing and the cotter pin fits just fine.
Like I said, just my 2 cents worth and we usually get what we pay for.

I had the same issue on a seven when i fitting a new wheel from Vans. I haven't actually measured the width of the wheel new and old wheel ( i should have done ) but i ended up using a longer bolt with the correct washers

And again on the 14 construction same issue New bolt sorted it

Mine was the same
Reply from Van’s was that the older style tail wheel they used to use was a bit thinner get longer bolt and happy days
