Trip report, DFW-Yellowstone

Well Known Member
Just got back from a GREAT 6 day trip to Yellowstone (stayed in West Yellowstone) and thought I'd share a few pictures. Approx 1000 miles/6 hrs flying each way and 600 miles of driving thru the Yellowstone and Grand Titan National Parks, also spent a day in Jackson Hole. What a great trip, wife is already planning the next adventure!
A nice break from the scorching TX temps was welcome, 39 deg in the morning, high of 80 in the afternoon!
Because Osh was not happening and we both planned the week off, we decided on Yellowstone as we had never been there.
Highly recommend KWYS airport, no fees, self serve fuel, rental car PU at the small FBO, super friendly folks!

Walt.....Those are great pictures. The clarity is amazing. Curious as to what camera you used.

All pics are from my wifes Iphone 11 plus, I quit carrying my big bulky cameras, these things take amazing photos.

Walt looks like you had a great trip and thanks for posting some pics.

P.S. Thanks for staying in the car near the Buffalo. ;) I can't tell you how many reports here in Wyoming we hear about people trying to pet them... lol The dumbest one being some hippie types trying to put a baby one in their car.

. . . . . . about your routes and altitudes into KWYS. :)

A snapshot of my FF plan thru the mountains, we actually went in at about 11.5 zigzagging up the canyons but decided to go to 13.5 on the way home (we also had a tailwind all the way home).

Walt,
Missed you 2.

We left 1 week ago.
The weather is a little better than DFW.

No question, Yellowstone is a special place. Did you stay in a hotel, or the airport campground?

We stayed at "Al's Westward Ho" motel (see pic in post 1), nice rooms right outside the west entrance to Yellowstone, rates were very reasonable. We reserve our camping experience just for Osh these days.

ArrrV-6

Is this the ArrrrV-6 that is painted up in USAF paint scheme? I saw your plane in Cody! My wife and I just flew from Idaho to NY with a “Blue Angles” blue with yellow wingtips RV-7. We did a quick fuel stop, ate breakfast at the restaurant, then continued eastbound. We also got pictures in Yellowstone, and Mt Rushmore. Awesome trip!

My wife and I just passed through here the other day too! We were eastbound from Idaho, and flew into the park at 11,500, circled Old Faithful, just north is Grand Prismatic Spring, then to Yellowstone Falls. Then we followed I-20 though the pass into KCOD. Easy-peasy. I felt there were safe places to land in the case of an emergency the whole time.. the roads and I-20. 11,500 was high enough to feel safe, and low enough to see it all. You can locate the landmarks on google earth, then mark them onto your foreflight.. another highlight was Mt Rushmore. They recommend 7700 feet or above (2000 above the park) and there was a unicom frequency to self announce that ATC provided while we orbited.

Here's a pic of the machine that made it possible.

Walt,

Great pictures and good to hear that you had nice trip. We loaded and cranked our minivan and headed to CO for hiking.

I stop by next weekend to have a quick chat.

Fantastic Pictures, Great trip report! Brings back many memories of our 2010 camping trip. Wife and I will have to try this. Thanks for sharing!
