Cornucopia Getaway

About mid-week, Andi and I decided we were going to get out of town and head up north to camp, so I searched for destinations. Bowstring is nice, but we were just over there for lunch. Browsing the RAF site, I saw there was a little strip up on Lake Superior that looked like fun - Cornucopia. 2000 ft, bikes in the shed, camping allowed, our kinda place, so I sent an email to the airport manager, and we connected on the phone. Gave me the brief - stay in the middle - and avoid the last 100 feet of the SW end - it drops off. He said camping was allowed, but that the ticks were really thick at the airport right now - maybe find a room in town. He had some suggestions - they all know each other in "Corny"

Andi and I discussed it and decided tick fighting was not what we wanted, so I called the Marina/ B&B and they had a room open - and we took it. They said they would pick us up, but I said we'd take the bikes......

Flight up was bumpy, and Andi was not happy, but she slept anyway. I was watching the ADSB winds grow to XW gusts and worried about a new to me 2000ft grass strip just 80 ft wide(stay in the middle). I did enjoy the view, tho!

The strip was a a bit intimidating from the air, but I was prepped for a go-around if necessary. Green lushness everywhere.....

I'm a hack, but the -9A always makes me look good on landing. Touchdown was smooth and we taxied to tiedown. We had arrived! The airport manager's brother greeted us, was expecting us! Offered us a ride into town- you get the picture, this really is a friendly place.

Mary Beth met us at the Marina and showed us the room - really nice with a balcony that looked over the lake! She was was concerned about the gusty crosswind and that we might not make it.(I was, too!)

Great breakfast from Mary Beth in the morning. We biked around to explore the town and got Coffee at Corny Coffee- the owner is a big supporter of the airport and was happy to see us.

We rode the bikes back up the hill to the airport, met some nice RAF members who had just flown in, and headed the hour home. Great little trip to a nice little strip, to a super little town!

Cornucopia get away

Great trip report. I spent a brief time in Cornucopia after riding UTVs all day to get there. Very nice place to visit. nice bar and restaurant too.

I am so happy that you and your wife enjoyed Cornucopia. It's really a wonderful village with a great laid back vibe and great people.

We have had lots of fun doing the improvements at the airstrip there and also at last year's inaugural Corny Solstice Fly-in. Please consider joining us at our next one in 2021.
