Garmin 430W Problem

Our 10 year old 430W gets stuck in the power on phase. After we turn it on it appears to be booting but when you hit the ENT button nothing happens. The boot-up screen remains on making the device unusable.

Our first thoughts were out-of-date database (we don't use it for IFR). However, an update didn't help.

Maybe a problem with the ENT button itself? Something more severe? Any ideas??

Thanks!
George

Have you pulled it from the tray and then re-installed it? Sometime "re-racking" is all it takes to solve problems like this.

The contacts under the ENT button probably need to be cleaned.
You have the following options:
1 take the 430 to a local avionics shop and have them send it to Garmin for reconditioning which is not cheap.
2 if you are handy with electronics or know someone who is then there are posts on this site that tell you how to perform the above mentioned cleaning yourself.
3 if you screw up option 2 then get yourself a Garmin 660 VFR GPS and use the 430 for ballast as the 660 is a much better GPS for VFR anyway ! If you have your autopilot connected to the 430 you can always wire it to the 660.
