Usher UD-3 fuel cap overcenter loose again

The Usher UD-3 fuel cap overcenter mechanism seems to be a failure mode for these fuel caps. I have replaced 3 of them and now have a 4th that has a weak overcenter. Anyone have any suggestions for repair or replacement other than just buying another of the same model?

Did you already try adjusting the tension using the nut on the bottom?

Yes.
I'm thinking the latch becomes rounded resulting in gradual failure of the overcenter mechanism. All of mine have had the same failure mode.

my caps are 8 yrs old. same since new. I am confident they will last 20 yrs.
