What did you do with your RV this weekend? (12/18/21 - 12/19/21)

Although a bit cold, there was no wind so I snuck out for a sunset flight last night, hoping for some good pictures. While the cabin stays warm, pre-flight and post-flight activities are obnoxious when there is cold and wind. OAT at the surface was about 5F.

Alas, not a sunset worth photographing, but all flights in these wonderful RV's are magical anyway.

Here's a shot from 4500' MSL of my home base airport of Wadena, MN. We had freezing rain a few days ago, and the surfaces are still mostly covered, but with a 4000' runway is wasn't a factor.

A magical world awaits those still building!

Backcountry Santa

There were about 65 airplanes delivering supplies and Christmas presents to the Navajo Nation yesterday. Items were picked up at Salt Lake Intl Airport and delivered to 5 different airstrips in southern Utah and northern Arizona. I had 180 lbs of stuff in my 9A. Volume was more a concern than weight when loading the plane. I flew the Monument Valley, UT trip.

Finally finished the last of the tasks for my CI. Final inspection from the mech tomorrow (I did not build my airplane, local mech has been supervising/advising.)

In retrospect, I should have gone to Vic. :)

Used the RV as an excuse to fly, again.

Friend, Architect and RV12 builder delivered our house plans for his excuse to fly. Thank You SO MUCH!

Heard a familiar RV7 taking off in the neighborhood, his excuse to fly the 40 miles to work instead of drive. Thank You SO MUCH for the transition training 8 years ago!

Hard to beat.

Quick trip to Michigan

Kind of a gloomy winter day in Northwest Indiana, but the weather was cooperative enough to take a quick dash to visit my friend Terry Lutz and finally see his beautiful RV8 "Sweet Nancy Lynn". A beautiful bird indeed and it was nice to see Terry, as we haven't gotten together since he helped me take delivery of my RV7 in early 2020. Looking forward to getting our better halves to join us for a trip to the Waco restaurant in Battle Creek!

It was a perfect day to fly. Recent cold temps and rain gave the local mountains a good dusting of snow. I ran north to Big Bear, did a touch and go, and then back home for some family time.

San Gorgonio is the highest local mountain at 11,503'.

San Antonio, aka, Old Baldy (10,063') in the distance. Redlands and San Bernardino airports below.

Went shopping to El Paso, TX via the "corridor". Picture taken on my way back to Ruidoso airport. At 9,500, it felt like I was touching the top of the hills. Ski Apache in the background but sadly, no snow. Temperature 27 in the air and 45 at the airport.

Got in some approaches.

At 5:15 had to drop grandma and grandpa off for their commercial flights. With the rest of the house still asleep I figured I would make use of the low ceilings. (8) approaches and you can't tell where I was hand flying! Woohoo!

That sure looks like Kalamazoo to me. Looks like you’re on left base for 17. I learned to fly there (WMU). I instructed at Kalamazoo Aviation - right side of 17 south end back then - now part of the museum. WMU Aviation moved over to Battle Creek. Sure wish I was flying, but will eventually, depending on how many more canopies I break on my “new” RV6. I’m envious. When people post “what you did with your RV this weekend”, nobody ever posts building pics and experiences, just flying stuff. That’s OK, I’d rather be flying too, but it makes me homesick, and I’ve only been in the building only phase for 4 months.

Yes, that’s KAZO

But we are still going to Battle Creek to eat at the Waco! I used to fly to AZO for many years with ComAir and had not been that close for years. ATC made me go around the Battle Creek Class D for some reason on my way home, but I got a nice view of a former destination with AZO!

Waco Kitchen

Mitch,
Just an FYI. The Waco Kitchen at KBTL is now closed for breakfast until the spring. We flew in this past Sunday morning and the manager let us know.

Rico!

What a beautiful country!
I can't wait to get up in the air and experience those kinds of panoramas...

Many different views up here in rainy Portland...waah waah waah
Was so looking forward to going out to Whiteman and seeing your plane, will make sure to do so next time I am down!

My next gig is in New Mexico in February and March. I will swing through Burbank on the return trip to meet up if you are in town.
