McFarlane Vernier Throttle - Friction Lock

Piper J3

Well Known Member
I friend has both torsion and extension throttle springs on his RV-12 equipped with McFarlane Vernier Throttle. The knurled friction lock has been marginal for a while, and now with added springs, the throttle creeps forward even when locked. Is there a way to improve the friction lock – perhaps add a washer to increase locking force?

I replaced my throttle cable about 50 hours ago. Both the old one and new one would slip when using both OEM springs. I found when using the torsion spring I only needed a little more spring tension not a full strength extension spring. This is why I came up with the 3 pound spring. The original springs were 10 pounds and McFarland ones were 5 pounds. Have him use a 3 pound extension with the torsion and it won’t slip.
