Shop head of the rivet goes on the side with the thinnest metal right?

I am about to start squeezing rivets and this question has been rattling in my head like the ball in a can of primer. The shop head goes no the side with the thinnest metal, unless called out specifically in the plans?

Thanks!

Or unless you can't easily set the rivet that way. It's a rule of thumb, but it would be better to do a good job setting the rivet. Sometimes you can get a bucking bar in where you can't get a gun or squeezer, so don't be so fixated on the "rule" that you cause problems for yourself.

Ditto. Or if installing it the opposite way in a tough to rivet place would make it easier to drill out when you mess up.

In other words, there is no "rule".

Structurally, if the rivet can be set without damaging the thinner metal, it'll be the same either way. Convention is to put the factory head on the thinner side because you're less likely to bugger it up.
