Blown master fuse, plane disabled in route

Plane disabled......Plane blew main 30 amp fuse in flight, only indication is battery discharging. Blew the spare fuse by switching on main. As I understand the main fuse covers the Rotax generator and the voltage regulator for charging. Can a stock voltage regulator fail to short out and blow a fuse? Stock wiring, first regulator just quit charging about 150 hours ago. No indication of recent low charging.

It was internally in the voltage regulator. All wiring was fine. Luckily had a spare in the spare parts carried in the plane. First thought was the voltage regulator but was in denial that it could burn out so soon especially since it went to ground this time rather than an open circuit like before.
