baffle installation question

Well Known Member
Since the baffles are glued in place (in addition to bolts), I assume that I should complete everything up to 47-14 prior to the actual installation of the baffles on the engine. This would allow one to use the tension rods to tighten things down and allow the RTV to actually be useful.

What I did..

I just finished mine yesterday and I initially had the same question but after reading the instructions and scratching my head a few times tried something that appears to work out fine. Wet RTV will smear all over the engine. I masked the noted areas, applied the thin layer of RTV and after 15 or so minutes - pulled the tape and let dry overnight. I was left with a nice even thin layer of cured RTV that made it easy to bolt to the engine. The RTV looks to seal just fine after drying.
I will say that the baffles were a work of art in how they fit up. I only had one small location that needed some filing.

That makes much more sense. Trying to put the baffles on when the adhesive is wet would be a nightmare.

what RTV did you use? clear window silicone or the 3M fire barrier silicone?

Permatex red

? Permatex High-Temp Red RTV Silicone Gasket Maker? Is what I have been using around the engine. Will use the 3M fire barrier in the firewall transitions.

Not familiar with this step from the RV14 manual. Got photos, or can you post the instructions?

There are a variety of high temp silicones suitable for baffle sealing, but Permatex Ultra Black (also sold as Loctite 598) looks the best and is specific for both temperature and oil resistance.

Permatex Ultra Black is what is called out in the plans. Additionally, I installed wet with no issue. I actually like the way it sealed the edges of the baffles.

EDIT: The post from RVbuilder2002 must mean my memory is bad about the RTV specified in the plans. It has been a few years. Perhaps I learned about Ultra Black on VAF?

The intent is for the RTV to be allowed to cure before installation (it is meant to be a scuff/wear protection, not a seal), but I admit that it doesn't appear to have been mentioned in the plans (I've made a note to update it on a future rev. release).

No specific product was specified to give builders options regarding what they have available, but I agree that Permatex Ultra Black is probably the best choice.

I assume these are the areas that are being discussed.

I did this part about a week ago and this looks like I took the picture! I did try the install wet and it was obvious it needed to dry. But dry it works perfect.
Build on! Larry
