GPS L5 signal

Was reading a little bit on the upgrades to the GPS constellation. One of them is the new L5 signal thats been included in new satellights since 2010. Described here.

Sounds like it will benefit avaition users. Wondering if anyone has heard of the certified box manufacturers (Garmin/Avidyne) say what their plans are for updating. Maybe just an antenna and software update?

good stuff

Very interesting reading. Probably not an antenna issue for upgrades. Maybe even just software for the waveforms and frequency coverage. Since so many modern receiver designs are SDR now, the front ends are sensitive and broad in coverage.
Accuracy and penetration through the canopy will benefit all parties.
Thanks for posting the link.

Just the capability to do ionospheric corrections through the use of different carrier frequencies will bring a very significant enhancement to navigational accuracy. While we have "LPV" now with L1 C/A receivers + WASS, the potential to provide much better accuracy is very real once we can use two carrier frequencies to calculate the errors that come from the vagaries of the satellite signal propagating through our atmosphere. This truly opens up huge possibilities.
