UPDATE

Here is a list of “accessory” items NOT included in the standard or QB Vans RV-14 kits.
Some items are needed, like seat belts, others are optional (inverted oil system)
Keeping it simple. Basic stuff only. Includes items needed for construction and some for operation.
Does not include panel & avionics (too many variables), and not include substitutions or modifications of kit items (again too many). In no particular order. Not including any particular product manufacturers.

Please comment if I missed something or need to edit. Thanks.

You might look at Cleveland for the RV-14 tool kit also - I understand you likely have tools already, but didn't know if, for example, the special squeezer sets for control surface trailing edges would be interesting to you.

Hi Bruce,

Here are a few things from my build:

Emp:

Strobe/Position light (AeroLED LN-210)
pitch servo (and yaw if desired)
garmin “hoop” for yaw servo (get from Stein)

Wing:

Strobe/Position light kit (AeroLED NS-90)
AeroLED Sunspot LX (LL LED KIT A)
Electric Aileron Trim kit (EA-10 kit)
Magnetometer bracket kit 14 (RV-14 GMU22 mount kit)
14 GARMIN AP SERVO INSTALL KIT
Gretz or similar mount for Pitot/AOA
roll servo

Fuse:

Tosten Left/Right control sticks w/Grip-14 (CS-00008T-L and -R)
delete standard control sticks
delete fuel and brake lines (go with Aircraft Specialty lines all-around!)
RV-14 Flap Position Sensor Kit (14 FLAP POSITION KIT)
Clear aluminum vent (VENT SV-6 CLEAR)
WH-00125 main wiring harness (get from SteinAir)

Finish:

Matco nosewheel, spacer, axle assembly (WHLNW511.25 nose wheel; WHLAXLE24; WHLA24SPKIT spacer) - incl. shipping
MICHELIN AIRSTOP TUBE 5.00-5 BNT90 097-908-0; MICHELIN AIR TIRE 500-5 6PLY 070-312-0 (3 each)
Camlocs (if you want to go that route)
Canopy Harness Kit (Van’s)

FWF:

delete oil/fuel lines (List on Aircraft Specialty site) and use AS lines, if desired
Airwolf Remote Oil Filter (get at Aircraft Spruce, and lines at Aircraft Specialty) - works nicely
B&C standby alternator (Aircraft Spruce)

- Seats & interior
- Seat belts
- lighting
- intersection fairings.
What else? Is there a list somewhere?

Intersection fairings are in the kit. You might want to replace/add:
Tosten sticks and grips
Parking brake
Sump heater (I consider it mandatory if you want to fly in Winter)
SS brake lines vs. kit supplied plastic
Stand-by alternator (if you fly IFR)
Tow bar

Lots of after-market stuff available, too. :D

If you'd like to save yourself at least one AMU over Van's offerings, we have lots of options for your RV-14 lighting requirements.
Our Combo or Quad Spot landing lights put out three times as many lumens as well...

Thanks for the replies.

Yeah, didnt want to get into avionics since there is a lot of stuff there.
Mainly focused on airframe things that are NOT included in the kit but you REALLY DO need them. You know, like a padded seat. And seat belts!

Interested in the bearing spacer. What does that do? planning on doing the bearing mod through Anti splat

The spacer kit was to ensure the Matco nosewheel/axle assembly would fit correctly and thus could be torqued in the fork assembly, which is 5.25" wide if I am remembering correctly.

I switched to the Matco because the old Van's finishing kits had a nosewheel/axle that could not be torqued to spec. I heard that the new finishing kits might now have a better solution - not sure how it compares to the Matco though.

Great Thread

We've been looking for this information, albeit for a -10. Thanks for the thread, Bruce!

Mike

The General Construction PDF in the WIKI has a lot of these threads discussing options.

I am working on moving them all to relevant topic headers as there's a lot of threads and two or three big pages was to hard to search.

See signature for link.

Things that aren’t necessary, unless you really want them:

Interior side panels
Cup holders
Parking brake
Sump heater (Does it get that cold where you are?)
Mapbox
Sunshade
Inverted oil system
Tailwheel fairing
Canopy cover

The airplane will fly fine without them.

David.

Included this in the preamble . . .
Some items are needed, like seat belts, others are optional (inverted oil system)

Not trying to judge. :D
Some RV's are bare (like Van would want them)
And some are tricked out.

Canopy release

Might have been mentioned already but the JD Air canopy release I feel is a must. The kit supplied handle seems almost “flimsy”. The one from JD seems very rugged.

I am in total agreement with the JD Air canopy release latch. I've already installed one on my fuse and love the look and feel. (BTW. I'm still making airplane noises and looking forward to completing my -14A.)
