What did you do with your RV this weekend (5/2/2020 - 5/3/2020)

Rocks and Lakes

I'll kick things off. Took advantage of a beautiful morning yesterday and took a trip up the middle for the Canadian Rockies.

First point of entry was via Lake Minnewanka which leads to Banff, Alberta.

minnewanka.png

From Banff I headed Northwest past amazing views all the way. This close look at some cliffs was a highlight.

Passed Lake Louise on my left.

And then continued up to Saskatchewan River Crossing before turning back East to fly the length of Abraham Lake. The ice coming out of the lakes makes for a great display.

Great day for flying, a little bumpy in places. Came home to Red Deer just in time to fight some thermals - pushed me up 400' from abeam the numbers to the base turn, with me trying to counter it. Made it down just fine, but definitely one of the stronger updrafts I've encountered.

These planes are such a fantastic way to see the sights.

I did a little medical emergency shuttle.

A friend recently moved from San Jose to Bend, OR. She hasn't figured out the health care in Oregon yet, and still has her HMO in San Jose. On Friday AM, she called to say she had a medical emergency and her doctor in San Jose wants her in the office ASAP, and could I fly her.

Launched from Ashland at noon, picked her up in Sun River at 12:45 (where there was a nice polished RV-6 on the ramp and a red RV-12 departing). Landed in San Jose at 3:30, and flew back to Ashland.

Strong west winds gave me headwinds on both N-S legs, and it was pretty bumpy. But mission accomplished. 5.6 on the Hobbs.

Nice to have a fast airplane

4V1 for cheap gas and Spanish Peaks flight seeing

4V1 (Walsenburg CO) seems to consistently have the cheapest gas around. I flew down today and filled up for $2.40 a gallon.

Here we are on short final on runway 9. Walsenburg is a pretty airport out on the high plains.

The Spanish Peaks are just west of Walsenburg, and south of La Veta. Not bad scenery.

We are warming up here, so we picked up a lot of bugs. Here is Sabrina Lee after cleaning off the leading edge of the wings; waiting for the next flight.

DAR time

Punch list is done, engine is happy, all systems are 'go', all checks are done ... ready to fly.

Time for the DAR! Almost an airplane.

I actually spend time at home this weekend and helped to paint the house (shelter at home projects) .. dunno the last time when I was not in the shop or hangar over a weekend for the last 3 years. So happy to have such a supportive wife and family.

TOUCH AND GO ? LaGuardia, JFK, Teterboro, Newark , and Hudson River Corridor

Made use of the lack of jets in the sky and made a day trip from Orlando to NYC to do some touch and goes and fly the Hudson Corridor. The controllers were extremely accommodating.

this is one of those posts that makes me wish there was a "like" button. Great news Bill! I'm so looking forward to hearing of your first successful ground-breaking.

Two firsts

Strapped on the chute Friday afternoon, flew up to the practice area north of Baton Rouge and flew my first barrell roll and Cuban 8. Just baby steps, but it's fun to go beyond the usual loops and aileron rolls. John

What did you do with you RV this weekend

I flew to North Georgia to a private strip called Mountain Airpark. I met two three friends there. Here is a picture of our airplanes parked beside the runway.

As for me, I only worked on the airplane Saturday. After 228 hours, spread out over 118 work entries from 2/4/19 to 5/1/20, my baffles are finally complete. Not totally thrilled with the outcome - the front bottom inlet seals were troublesome and make fitting the bottom cowl a pain - but they are essentially complete.

After securing the top cowl and checking seal fit with a borescope, I took a break, stepped back and reacquainted myself with the rest of the fuselage. Hello, airplane... missed you...

Sunday I stayed out of the shop, choosing instead to visit the hangar and exercise the vehicles... first the bicycle (and myself), then the Toyota station wagon, then the KLR650 (which I'm hoping to sell this spring to help fund the payment of my MI Sales and Use taxes this year and get the RV-8 registered).

Rode the KLR for 40 miles, then put it back in the hangar and took the Mustang for a long top-down drive before heading home and relaxing. Jumping back into the fiberglass finishing grind today... maybe.

Claude, did you drop down & check out the methane bubbles in the ice on Lake Abraham? (second lake pictured)

No, I blew past there at 9500' and 150kt ground speed. Didn't think to take a closer look. A 4000' descent in there would have been interesting.

KORD Landing

Like AV8ER, this weekend I decided to capitalize on the reduced airline traffic to land my RV-7 at what is normally one of the busiest airports in the world!

B-xcuY8W7hIBrnLA9dLGRmbaO26QtekcUtoPBWnkx-yesJhAKp8lf_lhVVOS0T9Js9xeRK7LPcnBt8BBSyX2T5NdvCQoAZ5CB27YDhJwy7eYJgvUoRuhnPWBf_JkQaj3kWekxnB0yrc=w1200

I'd done twice before the covid era but that was in the middle of the night once traffic had died down. To do it during daylight hours would normally be unthinkable. Awesome flight!

Flying Picnic

Flew to the Appalachians to Mountain City, TN ( 6A4), with my wife, grabbed the crew car, drove to Cherokee National Forest and hiked on a beautiful creek-side trail to the Virginia state line...where the trail abruptly ended. Enjoyed a delicious chicken salad picnic, then returned home straight through CLT Class B...easy to do nowadays, since I didn't hear a single radio call to/from an airliner! All in all, a 4-state romp, done with ease, thanks to my RV-8.

Pictures show up yet?

I redid the photos following the google photos tip I found. Can you see them yet? I sure wish there was an easy way to get google photos to work. The trick seems to get google photos to "pops out" so that when you copy the image location it works.

[ed. No sir. I don't see them - you have to set Google pics in a 'shared' folder. v/r,dr]

Claude Pitre - I flew my -8 from Calgary to Kamloops last summer on my way to Alaska via Mackenzie, Watson Lake and Whitehorse. What a beautiful tip but that valley past Lake Louise was awesome!

I did not slow down long enough to figure out what they charge! LaGuardia, Newark, and Teterboro the plane was rolling the whole time. JFK declined the touch-n-go but let me taxi back. They had an airbus on final for the shorter 4R and I assume they did not want me upwind on 4L incase he needed to go around? He did have to hold short while I departed 4L after the taxi back. No charge at JFK either. Here in Orlando I often do touch-n-gos at KMCO (Orlando International) and have never paid a fee. As I understand the FBO is the one who will charge the fee.

What were the landing fees?

Red Dawg

I rebuilt the brakes and went for a little joy ride in the Red Dawg. Now I?m back to building the RV.
