ELT Placement

Hi All,

I reckon I am going to fit an ELT in the aft fuse, behind the baggage bay.

Any one had issues? It is going to be less than 2feet from the 2X ADAHRS units.

I was planning on putting a basic frame on the side longerons to attach the base plate to.

If any one has done this and is happy to share piccies, I would really appreciate not re-inventing the wheel!

Cheers,
Ben

I manufactured a shelf aft of the baggage compartment and fit the ELT, strobe, flap and trim control boxes. Easy to get to during annual condition inspections or routine maintenance. The hardest issue is finding a place for the ELT antenna because of the sliding canopy. I did what others before me had done. Mounted on the aft side of the rear right armrest with the antenna curving with the turtle back and held in place with a couple of adel clamps. Yes, your coaxial cable will need to go through a couple of bulkheads. Not ideal but it works. The wire bundle was further supported with click-bond cable tie mounts, they’re just not in the picture.

OP has a RV8

Van's sells a mounting plate for the side. That is what I used. There is one for the left and right side.

The OP has a RV8, not sure if that plate works as it's intended for a RV7/9

I used a cutout of the instrument panel as a base, with a couple of 3/4 in. angles riveted to the side longerons.
Antenna is the short version from ARTEX, made a small bracket and it's mounted just aft of the front seat brace. I might change the bracket for a slightly thicker version.

ELT position

I have placed mine behind the baggage area on the bottom stringers. I have no problems with the position. I have run the antenna wire to the antenna on the left side between the two seats.

If you would like a photo let me know…..can’t manage uploading one here.

Best wishes, Brent

Nice shelf, if you ever have to crawl in the rear fuse though (static system leak to come to mind) it could present a problem.
