2550 Hour Report

Well Known Member
9er-Pop-Hotel turned 2550 on the hobbs flying back from South Bend to see Mom the other day! So I drained the oil after landing and went back the next day and cleaned the K&P filter and Suction screen, scoped the valves, and checked to see if she still has any compression the cylinders.

The filter had the usual carbon flakes that crush between the fingers and the screen had bigger chunks of the same. The filter magnet had a bit of ferrous dust. Cold compressions were 72,74,78,76. Plugs were dry and tannish in color. I added 1 Qt over the 50 hours, .5 at 35 hours and rest at 42 hours - she always burns a bit towards the end of the oil life.

My setup is a carbed O-320, dual EI, I run almost all 91 mogas and am LOP 90% of the time. On the trip to South Bend she ran great - at 9500 on the way down I was 149KTAS at 5.9-6.1 GPH. I run 20W-50 XC but no idea if it makes a difference.

Here are the new valve pics:

From what I can see, you are doing it right, Pete. Impressive! I hope my future engine reports look like yours!

Are you doing oil analysis, like Blackstone?

Fred, could you provide a list of items that would make the fuel system ethanol compliant....

I have to ask: Is this thread to discuss long term effects of running mogas, or to show how far past recommended TBO the engine can go? (Am I missing some information here?)

You'll find out

You'll have to stay with it to find out.

Impressive looking valves after 2500hrs and good compression.
Lots if info abound on the forum on mogas E10 and nice to see a report and pics at 2500hrs.
I won't ask about what kind of scope you used we have enough confusion already:D

Fred, could you provide a list of items that would make the fuel system ethanol compliant....

1. ALL hoses, (gas & oil) need to be teflon .
2. Forced air to showd on engine fuel pump.
3. Forced air on showd around gascolator (if you have one)
4. No 90* fittings in the low pressure side of fuel supply (ie, between the selector valve and engine fuel pump).
5. Replace ALL quick drain "O" rings with butal rubber "O" rings
6. Add circuitry and sensors to automatically turn ON boost pump if fuel pressure at the fuel servo/carburetor falls below a preset pressure. (pilot selectable for OFF, AUTO, ON).

Boring Scope

It's cheap and simple.

- Linux Mint on an old laptop running the "Cheese" app
- 7mm camera on a wire supported by safety wire
- Insert in plug hole
- Position to point at valve
- Snap away!

Search for "7MM Android Endoscope Camera Micro USB Type-c Industrial Borescope" $5-10 if you get it direct from overseas.
