Autopilot and iPad connectivity using foreflight?

This is a rather long question...but here goes. I just found a bare wire lightning plug on Sportys site for hardwiring an iPad to the avionics buss. I don't see any info other than the pics of the cable. I believe the iPad serial chargers are 5-6 volts ? This cable from Sportys has no step down transformer or resistor that I can see..Has anyone in the forum used this cable to "hardware" their iPad to the buss? Second question...these cables appear to have other wires, possibly a serial out to drive an autopilot? Ideas? Part number on the cable is 3441a. I spoke with Sportys about any directions of speciifics on the cable....they had no info.

USB uses 5VDC. If you have a cable without a voltage converter, do not hook to 12VDC. If you do, video it please for the benefit and enjoyment of all.

iPad hookup

That's what I thought too Jesse.....sure would be entertaining to watch a Stratus and iPad go up in smoke! I'm surprised that Sportys didn't know details on their products. They also are discontinuing the bare wire cable kit for the Stratus 2s.....the customer support girl said to " cut off the serial end of the cord and wire it directly"...! No thanks....ill pass. Any ideas on a serial out from the iPad by accessing the line in the cable Jesse?

Is this what you are talking about:

If so, DO NOT BUY this cable with the intention of wiring it directly into a 12v buss.

These bare wire cables are meant to be used in conjunction with the iFDR panel mount kits. Those kits include the necessary transformers and circuitry you need to wire into a 12v buss to power an iPad or iPhone. These bare wire cables is so that you can add an additional device to one of those panel mounts and have a "spare cable" that you can tuck away. For example, You have your iPad in an iFDR panel mount, and then you could use one of these cables to power your iPhone at the same time.

Here's the website for the iFDR panel kit:

And specifically the site for the panel and power supply:

Power cable

That's the cable....going the stein route with the panel mounted serial receptical...Still begs the question of a serial out on the Lightning plug....has anyone ever checked for serial out to drive an autopilot via the Lightning cable while using Foreflight? Thanks Cubedroot for the info! I'm going to call them and see if the transformer is available separately....haven't ordered parts just yet. Yep....their power transformer is available for $200! Customer says go the plug in receptical!
