Default Starter issues - not fully engaging.

Hi all, had some starter issues on the 6A today. Upon initial pushing of the starter button the starter engages then if it doesn’t catch right away it seems as if the gear starts disengaging while still spinning. This is evident by a horrible grinding sound and the engine not spinning. If held a little longer the gear disengages completely and I can hear it spinning but completely disengaged. Subsequent start attempts result in the same thing.

Any ideas what failure mode this is before I start going down rabbit holes?

Sounds like the Bendix unit needs cleaning and fresh lube.

There has been discussion on this in the past, it might help to tell us what starter you have.

Two styles of starter. In one, the solenoid pull the gear into engagement. In the other, rotaational inertia drive the gear into position. Hard to help when we don't know what starter you have.
