So, once the sun tail is fitted to the rudder, how in the world do you get inside to hold the size 4 lock nuts???? There is absolutely no room!!!

How to mount Suntail

Hi Clark:

I used some 1/16" plywood, I cut two pieces the shape of the Suntail outline. I put two "T" nuts into the ply and then bounded the two pieces of ply together to entrap the T nuts. I then glassed this assembly into the rudder bottom fairing.

Worked out well.

I used a couple of hinge eyes (the kind that are formed, not rolled) tapped for #4 screw. Leave some hinge material on each eye for a tab. A little flox to glass them inside the fairing (screw installed to hold while the flox sets) and you now have two "nut plates" to attach the SunTail.

Another option is to fill the "holes" and area where the nut would go with flow. After it cures drill and tap for the screws. Working great on my plane.

Rolled my own

Well, in 2013, if I'd known Cleveland offered a bracket like that, I'd have used it. Instead, I fabricated a bracket out of 0.125" steel, through which I drilled the big center hole and two screw holes which I tapped for the screws. I also made this piece permanent by microing it into the tail cap.

Here's how I did it:
