I am getting ready to build a motor and wanted to step up in class during the portions of the build where catastrophic FOD inside the motor could occur.

Specifically the portion where I put a piece of cardboard where the mags and other accessories go.

So since I have been designing things on Solidworks for the plane, figured I could give this a try. The studs on the case are too long. I will fix that later. This is just a trial fit. I rounded the edges on the cover so I could easily grab it with my fingers to remove it. I also re-enforce the area with a flange in case it got smacked, it did not fall apart. The part is strong like bull.

Nice. If the printer had the vertical capacity, why not build up tubes around the studs so you could simply use a nut to secure? Or are you saying those studs are not right for you final assembly anyway and have to come out reguardless.
 
Studs are not right. They came set up for mags with the 2 inch spacer. I will be using pmags so the studs are way shorter.
 
Nice job for a temporary cover...just wanted to stress the importance this is for a temporary thing and not to be left on for actually running the engine
 
PLA? Not worth risking a $30K engine with a 10 cent part. 3D Printers have their place, but not in this application..... even if that was made of nylone

I think you missed the point. This is a cover to be only used during construction. Not operation.
 
So much nice than the ones I hacked out of some old sheet metal I found behind the workbench Axel...nice job!
 
Heh, not too long ago printing those would have been prohibitively expensive. Amazing how this technology has progressed.
