Not sure if anyone else has seen this but today I discovered the door on my Right (aft) Heater door had broken off.

Not a huge deal - I was able to build a replacement door but as you all know getting the Heater Box Off and On isn’t the most fun. But I wanted to share just in case someone else has one goes bad - I just happened to notice it while doing my annual inspection.

Mike,
The photo links want you to have a google account and I have that, but the link went nowhere.

Can not view the photos but if it’s the SS boxes and the little spot welds failed, it is a known problem and discussed on the forum maybe a year ago or so.

I had both so my SS control arms come off, one last year, one this year. What a pain to remove and reinstall. Would have been so easy to reweld before installation.

Photos update

Sorry about the photo sharing issue - I went in to my original post and tried to update my photos - after re-reading the photo posting instructions:). Let me know if I need to try again.

I am also glad to hear I am not the first to experience this issue. When it comes to aircraft issues I hate being special:).

Just to clarify I have the original Heater Boxes (not SS upgrade) with Pro-Seal between the box and firewall. I mention the pro-seal as when I spoke with Greg at Vans he suggested adding RTV to help with vibrations in that area.

I had one control arm come off and was able to re-attach with two rivets without having to remove the unit. It is doable.

Looks like control cable attach nut is tight on control arm. This has to be able to be loose enough to rotate or else you are putting torque on control arm. I had to cut back the sleeve on the control wire to relieve the binding that takes place between the two control cables. My two cents, I've been known to be wrong.

I've had one of the SS door arms come off 5 yrs after completion, so 6-7 after purchase of the part. Since it runs the aft heat, the door is taped shut and the fix is on the to do list. Riveting in place seems like it would be more of a challenge than removal of the offending box since those are mounted with bolts/nutplates, but since I have tried neither yet that's opinion and not data...
