Tank joint strip

Steve

Well Known Member
The instructions say to draw a line 5/16" from the joint strip edge. Then slide the strip between the end rib and skin until the line is centered in the skin holes. This will leave 5/8" of the strip revealed. In actuality 7/8" of the strip is exposed. Unless the 1 1/2" wide strip is narrowed by 1/4", the math just doesn't work. Will this extra 1/4" cause problems later on when fitting the tank to the spar?

Factory Follow-up Response

The object is to get 5/8" showing. Do either of the following:
1. Cut the 1 1/2" strip to 1 1/4" wide then draw the witness line 5/16" from the new edge.
2. Slide the strip outboard another 1/4" or so to achieve the 5/8" reveal.
3. Fit the tank and end rib to the spar then check for a gap between the LE and tank skins at the joint. If all fits well, proceed with construction. I'll try this one first.

discrepancy

The plans book says 5/8" will be showing after the line is centered in the skin holes. The B/P has a 7/8" dimension for the same feature. As my old drafting prof said, "follow the drawing not the text".
I still mounted up a tank skin and outer it's rib to check for clearance.
