RPM setting question....

Quick question for you experienced RV-6a's with a fixed P Lycoming 0320E2D, 160hp.

Does 155 mph cruise @ 2380rpm sound a bit slow or is that pretty much standard ?
What would you consider that setting % wise ?

What are the RPM settings ?

I am looking at a plane and the owner stated these cruise #s...

Many thanks !

That's close to what I see cruising down low. 6A, O-320E2D 150hp, 200 hrs, 77 metal, 2350, 150mph indicated, or so.

Thanks, and at altitude that would translate into approx. what ?
Is that considered 70% ?

Again,thanks for your input....

You can't tell much from simple RPM readings. You really need manifold pressure information to have a good idea of how much power the engine is delivering.

I have a cruise pitched Aymar Demuth prop on my 160 HP RV-6. It is a 155 knot (TAS) airplane at 2400 RPM & 24" of MP.

What's the fuel flow?

In the O-320 powered 172 I used to fly 9.6 GPH was 75% power.

With a FP prop, you can go high and run them on the redline at WOT until TBO while producing 75% power. The higher you go, the lower the % power but you will still be on the redline.

Coming back home yesterday: 7500' msl, 2400 rpm, EFIS showing 66% hp (sorry didn't look at MP) 8.4 gph, 150 KTAS.

Bill,

In the O-320 powered 172 I used to fly 9.6 GPH was 75% power.

Fuel flow like that is not a measure of 75% power, you could have had various fuel flows on the rich side of peak and been making 75% power based on the MP & RPM.

If you were LOP, at 75% power the flows would be 8.16 to 7.55 GPH depending on the CR of the engine.

Daves numbers of 7500' (22.4MP) and 2400 are about right for 66% power when running ROP and I guess about 50-100dF ROP, which could have been a bit richer in my opinion. ;)

150-155 KTAS is about right, and if it is a tidy one at 10-20dF LOP will get this. We have an RV6 here like this on 150HP. Nice machine.:)

Hi

O-320-E2D
150 hp (112 kW) at 2700 rpm, Minimum fuel grade 80/87 avgas, compression ratio 7.00:1. Similar to E2A but with Slick magnetos and 0-235 front.

Why is yours 160hp?

I upgraded my E2A with 8.5/1 pistons and heavy wall pins but I would find out what has been done to this one before buying.

MPH

Saturday made a couple if short hops and mine was averaging 180 mph at 2375 rpm, altitude was 4k. I have a Berne Warnke cruise prop on my 160.
