Tom, if your carb has an accelerator pump like most, just exercise the throttle 1-3 times before starting.

Yes, while cranking!

+1 on pumping while cranking cold engine then idle to act as choke. As soon as it fires up crack throttle to maintain 1000 rip-ems.

On a normal day it takes about 2 pumps. On a cold WI day it takes at least three unless the fuel in the bowl has warmed up a bit from preheating. 100LL has lower vapor pressure and you need more gas when it's cold to create the needed vapor for ignition.

If the engine was running recently then just crack the throttle and let her chooch.

Primer systems are just another failure point that could cause fire

Default Using throttle to prime - not me!

Using the throttle to prime is forcing a large quantity of raw fuel into the carb then into the cylinders. I’ve been taught not to do this due to potential of a backfire leading to an engine fire. A primer injects fuel directly into the cylinders which, l believe, is safer. Just my two cents guys.
