RV-1 "I-70/I-80 Barnstorming Tour" May 28-June 2

As you can see from the pictures everyone's been posting and linking to, its been a great couple days of flying, BBQing and sharing the story of the RV-1!

The trip from Mishawaka to Lees Summit on 5-30 was just a great day of flying, with a nice stop in Lacon, IL comlete with RV-1 Plays Peoria T-shirts and a tank of gas, courtesy Bill Lane (thanks Bill!).

Don McNamara handed escort duties off to KC Flight at Moberly, MO, where we also met up with Paul Dye and Tsam. BeeGee Gill and KC FLight led the -1 into Lees Summit with a nice smoking 4-ship diamond, with the -1 in trail.

Mike Dooley, KC Flight and EAA 91 at LXT (Lees Summit) were phenomenal hosts! The party and presentation there was a great event, and KC flight topped it off with a nice formation demo!

On 5-31 (yesterday), the handoff between Bill, Keith and Mike of KC Flight to Steve Barger, formerly of Reno, now of Hastings, NE occured at McPherson, KS, where our host Tom Chandler greeted us with donuts (just what we needed..., well except for the waistlines ) and a fillup of avgas (thanks Tom!). I know someone has a pic of the MPR gang, so please post if you do!

Steve and KC Flight escorted the -1 to Colby, KS, where we met Jim "Gringo" Gray and the Rocky Mountain Renegades. Here's a pic of all the planes on the ramp in Colby:

And another of the Colby Crew (Keith, Bill and Mike of KC Flight front, Steve B to photo left, and the Renegades in gunmetal blue):

The next leg was a fairly bumpy 2.0 into Rocky Moutain Regional (KBJC), in Broomfield, CO, just north of Denver, near Boulder. Gringo led a smokin' 6-ship delta into BJC, which you've already seen pics of (it looked really cool from the trail position!), and we taxied into one of the larger crowds we've had so far (much like Lees Summit). A great BBQ and hangar flying session occured at Jim's hangar, and we slept in the suite above Jim's hangar last night (nice digs!).

We leave I-70 today, head north to Wyoming, where we meet Bob Ashmore and Gary Kopecky of Ogden, and resume the I-80 portion of the Barnstorming tour. Keep those pics coming, and we'll share the fun from Utah and parts west in future posts! Thanks for following along!

Cheers,
Bob

On the ground at Ogden

He should be down for the night. I hope the Utah folks enjoy the visit. Our next-door neighbors traveled "all the way from Texas" in their ground-based RV to join the fun tonight. Say "Hi!" to them as well as Nasty.

Need to ask Bob Mills about June 3 Marysville

Hi

Louise, Paul, someone?

I have been trying to get a hold of Bob Mills but he is in the air or pounding down burgers all day. How many barbeques does it take to exceed the MTOGW of the RV-1?
I know he plans to deliver the RV-1 to Marysville on June 2. I'm wondering if it might be available for viewing on Sunday June 3?

Thanks,

Thanks,

THE plan currently has me delivering the RV-1 to Marrysville on Tuesday afternoon.

Thanks Tim!

So, does that mean it would be available to see in Stead on Sunday?

(you can tell.....Sunday is the only day I have free)

Thanks Bob for the write up, it was a lot of fun being the escort across Kansas! Meant a lot of new RVers, and now have a few more places to visit on my bucket list. Say hi to the Reno bunch, need to make a trip out there in the near future:D

It should be there at Stead on Sunday. I can't speak to availability, but I'm betting....

Steve, soooooo sorry I haven't called or replied to your e-mail. Just did a major forehead slap , as I've been meaning to call, big time, to tell you that if you can come up Sunday, it'll be available for sure...however it fits your schedule! Call me, and I'll be there!

See you then!

(Embarrased!)

Cheers,
Bob

Will do Steve...great seeing you and flying with you again! Thanks for the RV-1 fill-up, and for flying down from Nebraska to be a part of the RV-1 Escort team!

Cheers,
Bob

BJC-RWL-RKS-OGD (Denver to Ogden)

Another great day of flying on the Barnstorming Tour...and we're across the Rocky and Wasatch Mountains! The vistas were a bit different today than the past few days. The patchwork quilt of the Plains and the Heartland gave way to the rugged Continental Divide:

There's a VAF hat in there:

Fellow SWA pilot and recent RV-7 builder Bob Ashmore took over escort duties in Rawlins, WY, and was superb getting us into Ogden via Weber Canyon and through Hill AFB airspace:

Over 25 RV's awaited us on the ramp in Ogden, and the BBQ and reception was a great time...quite a hub of RV activity in Ogden!

A fun afternoon of sharing RV-1 stories and scoping out lots of nice modern RVs, a nice long hangar-flying session, and another great sunset from a local hangar ended another great day in the RV-1 Barnstorming Tour.

Tomorrow its off to Twin Falls, ID, Winnemucca, NV and Reno-Stead, NV!

Cheers,
Bob

A piece of History

Enjoyed the visit into BJC and seeing the arrival was Great! I think those who attended will look back one day and realize they are a special part of RV History. Don't miss an opportunity to see the RV1 fly!

Thank you Jim Gray for all you did to host this event and your crew headed up by Ricky and Carolyn on the ground did a fabulous job!
The Renegades were as always impressive!:)

I had the pleasure of flying with Bob and the RV-1 from Ogden UT (KOGD) to Twin Falls ID (KTWF). Flight was great, not bumpy at all.

My wife took over 500 pics, once I get them uploaded I'll share the pics.

Was awesome to see the plane, visit with Bob, and fly with the plane. A great piece of RV history that I will certainly never forget!

On the ground in Twin Falls Idaho. Bob Mills (flying RV-1) is in the middle in the red shirt.

The people to the left of him in the picture took him to Winnemucca from Twin Falls. The group to the right of him in the picture is the group from Ogden that brought him to Twin Falls.

Gary Kopecky, Jeramy Higgins (me), Boots.

Great flight, really happy to be a part of this!

More pictures from the KOGD to KTWF leg.....
