Fly over

We had 10 airplanes do a fly over for Vets, fire and police in Harper, Tex. They had a parade after our fly over. We had a missing man formation.

Parked the RV

So I could fly Young Eagles in the Cessna this weekend! Oh yeah, this also doubles as a "hat sighting". :D

Added cooling louvers

I had oil temps higher than i wanted.
I had to throttle back during steep full power climbs, even in moderate temps.

To improve the airflow out of the bottom cowl, to get rid of the hot air i attached a “spoiler” to raise the suction on the outlet.
It worked, but i didn’t like it too much….

This weekend i put in cooling louvers from the automotive motorsport world.
I figured that speedwise we are in the same ballpark and some aerodynamic brainwork went into them.

It took a bit of time till i was ready to make a cut into a perfect painted cowling, i sanded down the outer layer of the honeycomb and epoxied the whole part in (flush). After filling and sanding i put a fibreglass layer ontop of everything.

I like the look of them.
Temps are right where i want them to be.
Gained 7 KTAS in comparison to the “spoiler”.

Cowling will eventually being painted again after 10-15 hours of operation and if no cracks appear.

p.s. still being jealous that i did not make it to the formation clinic in Trento, Italy. But this is a story some others have to tell………

p.p.s. Admins, if you want to move this post to“Fiberglass”, i am fine with that.

nothing...
Which reminded that there are other things way more important in life than anything RV (or not...) related...

Lights, Camera….

Really trying to get all the wiring done so I can fire up the panel then move on to firewall forward. If I have typos, I am still seeing spots from the position light test. I dont dare open my eyes with the strobes.
Seriously, the rules say either a beacon or strobes must be operating while engine is running. Not sure what I am going to do on the ground, the strobes are going to be bright.

On 09/11/2021 we enjoyed a short beach flight - a wonderful way to end the day and celebrate the freedom to fly on such a momentous date..

On Sunday morning we headed north to McCollum Field for lunch at the Elevation Chophouse and Skybar:

After enjoying a delicious meal, I checked out a couple classic aircraft on the ramp including a Lockheed "Jetstar" and a turbine DeHaviland "Caribou":

We found a pretty RV-6A parked alongside our RV-6!

On the flight back south towering buildups were everywhere..

After passing over KCEW, Eglin approach took us alongside the western edge of the VFR corridor and right over Hurlburt AFB:

Despite the high overcast and cooler temps, Pensacola Beach seemed busy as ever..

Before landing at 82J we had the unique chance to fly right over NAS Pensacola since the airspace was closed for the weekend:

Did charity poker run in support of The little Lighthouse charity, hot and windy day in Oklahoma so lots of good landing and take-off practice:)
Good time had by all, won nothing as usual.

Hi Peter, how do you have your oil cooler mounted? I have the opposite problem - my oil is too cool. I think it's because I offset my cooler just a little bit back from the cylinder when I mounted it on the baffle. I will need to block some of the cooler, even on the "hot" 25°c days here.

On Sunday my wife and I flew to San Luis Obispo CA to visit with our 2 sons who live/attend school there. It was only her 2nd flight in the airplane (51 hours on the Hobbs since I finished it) and it was a big hit. 3 hour car drive vs a 51 minute flight….. she now understands what a “time machine” the RV-14 is. I see many trips in our future to visit her sisters and other destinations that are always painful drives in So Cal traffic.

Knoxville - beautiful time there

my wife and I were impressed with Knoxville this weekend. the downtown airport was great (an island). we went there to run the Smokey Mountain Half Marathon.

my plan was:
1. fly there
2. win the race (I was 18th of 52 in my age group) need to do some more work and lose another 10 lbs.
3. eat like a pig
4. fly away

3 out of 4 ain't bad, but my main goal was to have a good time with my wife.

my wife finished the half marathon and did it walking. she is a good walker. it's nice to see her excited and be bopping around wanting to go again next year.

restaurants in Knoxville that we would recommend:
Dopo pizza
SoKno Taco
Honey Tupelo
Fai Thai
Pete's Coffee Shop

at the end of the trip she said "the plane is small but it sure beats driving".

4 day rental car and delivered to the airport, $104.

mission accomplished.

Hey Chuck,

Wondering if I met your Mare over GWB some four (five?) years ago? You made a heck of an impressive course reversal there I remember the paint scheme. The Mare left for Long Island after the Corridor...

Vlad,
That could be you the plane you saw, I think it is based out of Alexandria Airport in NJ.

That isn't my plane though, am plane-less, I just took that photo and some of the others.
